Can you specify what vehicle, standard or automatic? Is the clunk as soon as you shift into reverse or when you press on the gas peddle? If it is when the peddle is pressed then let off does it clunk again? Does the car shake or lunge when it clunks?

I have a 1995 sl320 on occation my reverse is delayed for a few seconds and when in reverse backing up a hill it wants to shutter I then stop put in park and then reverse will be alright ,,any idea?


Stage pistons may be going bad. They can be replaced in car depending. If replacing fluid and stage pistons don't help then full rebuild is required.

I would first off have the trans serviced.usualy that is a sign of the bands wearing out.

Shaking in reverse


I read you other post. A motor or transmission mount may cause vibration throughthe whole car. However, it will not cause the delay you described in going into reverse. If you want to know if you have a bad motor mount all you have to do is get someone to help you and watch the motor mounts when you put the thing in gear (both forward and reverse) and brake-torque the engine a little. If the mount is broken, you will see the break when it comes up under load.

Otherwise, it sounds to me that you are describing an internal transmission problem.

My 2001 Saturn SL1 no longer goes in reverse, it only revs but does not catch. It is also starting to slip between first and second gear. About how much will a new transmission cost?


Sounds like this is an automatic s-series. Sounds like you previously had a reverse slam in the car. Meaning when you put it in reverse it would delay then slam. As this gets worse it begins to untorque what is known as the input shaft nut. Eventually this nut will get so loose that you lose reverse completely.

The transmission itself is fine and does not need replacement. $1,600-$2,200 is probably not even what the car is worth. The valve body needs to be changed out with a rebuilt one and the input shaft nut needs to be replaced and torqued down properly. Both of these are easily done by any backyard mechanic. Roughly 3 hours will have your transmission shifting like new.

I rebuild Saturn valve bodies (check my ad for more information) and provide instructions on how to do the repair. It costs much less than what any shop will tell you and they'll tell you the transmission is toast...IT IS NOT!

hi, did the trans selector physically not go into the reverse position, or was there a long delay after you put the car in reverse. If there was just a long delay, I would check the transmisssion fluid level and condition first. Since you did not specify your mileage, I am assuminhg you have higher mileage since it is a 2000 my. The transmission in your car was possibly subject to programming updates that addressed internal pressure lost when first putting in reverse. Since you are just first experiencing an issue, I would not wait to have it looked at.

Sometimes heater will blow cold air and a/c will blow hot air --a while back it started having a clicking noise but now it has stopped and started not working properly. i keep working with it and put it on...


Clump sound is probably the blend air door inside housing moving to where it's supposed to be. Is that when you notice it heating like it should? Try to pay attention when driving to see if you hear that "clump" noise or feel different temperatures as you accelerate, and then let of the gas, which would indicate vacuum operation of blend air door, and tells you that there is a vacuum leak somewhere in the system, or a perhaps just a faulty check valve in the line somewhere. let us know.

Hi ray_c_brown, This pause is determined by a time lag test, and you can check this yourself with a stop watch.Engagement time in "D" range should be a maximum of 1.2 seconds and the engagement time for reverse should be a maximum of 1.5 seconds. So with your vehicle warmed up and assuming curb idle speed is correct set the park brake,make sure ac is off (air cond) shift transfer case to 2H or if it is a NP249 transfer case leave in 4H,put your vehicle into neutral and set your stop watch shift to Drive and record time repeat this a couple of times and do the same with reverse,as you said the delay is with reverse so if it takes longer than 1.5 seconds here are a few things it could be:shift cable adjustment,low line pressure,worn direct clutch, first/reverse brake worn or a worn or damaged overdrive clutch.Hope this helps you good luck :)
