The low oil pressure warning lamp will illuminate anytime the ignition switch is turned to the ON position without the engine running. When the engine is running, the light also illuminates if the engine oil pressure drops below a safe oil pressure level. To test the system, perform the following:
If the oil pressure light does not work, perform the following:
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  2. If the lamp does not light, check for a broken or disconnected wire around the engine and oil pressure sending unit switch.
  3. If the wire at the connector checks out OK, pull the connector loose from the switch and, with a jumper wire, ground the connector to the engine.
  4. With the ignition switch turned to the ON position, check the warning lamp. If the lamp lights, make sure the oil pressure switch is properly grounded in the cylinder block, and if so replace the oil pressure switch. If the lamp still fails to light, check for a burned out lamp or disconnected socket in the instrument cluster.
To diagnose an oil pressure light that stays on, perform the following:
  1. Check the engine oil level and top off as necessary. If the engine was 2 or more quarts low on oil, test start the engine after topping off the oil level and recheck the oil pressure light operation. If the light stays on, stop the engine immediately and go to the next step.
  2. Disconnect the wire at the sending unit, then turn the ignition switch to theON position. If the light remains on, check the wire from the sending unit to the gauge for being shorted to ground and repair as necessary. If the light goes out, turn the ignition switch OFF and go to the next step.
  3. Replace the oil pressure sending switch with a known good switch.
  4. Start the engine and check the oil pressure light operation. If the light stays on with the engine running, stop the engine immediately to avoid severe engine damage until the cause of the problem can be determined.

WARNING
If the oil pressure light remains on while the engine is started, stop the engine immediately. Do not operate the engine until the cause of the problem can be determined. Operating an engine with low oil pressure will cause severe internal damage.

Possible causes for an oil pressure light to stay on are:

Pinched or grounded sensor wireDefective oil pressure sending unitRestricted or severely leaking oil filterExcessive internal engine bearing clearance.Insufficient or severely contaminated engine oilBlocked oil pump pickup screen or severely worn oil pump

Why would the oil light stay on?

That depends on the type of oil warning light being displayed. There are 2 types of warning lights

1. Low oil pressure light which all cars have
2. low oil level light which some cars have.

Low OIL PRESSURE warning means the oil pressure is below minimum and when this happens there will be insufficient lubrication of many engine parts because sufficient oil cannot get to all parts of the engine it is required to lubricate. Until the cause is identified and rectified the warning light will remain. If you run your engine with low oil pressure you will cause expensive damage to internal engine components.

Low OIL LEVEL warning means the oil in the sump has dropped to a dangerously low level (which may be due to an oil leak or abnormal oil consumption by the engine.) This warning means the oil level needs to be topped up and the warning will stay displayed until you top up the oil. Running the engine with low oil will cause expensive engine damage.
Since it is a 2 minute job, Oil levels should be checked fortnightly as a minimum, together with radiator coolant and power steering fluid levels, if you run the car most days each week as most people do.

It is possible for a warning light to remain displayed when the cause has been dealt with because there is a problem with the sender unit. However it needs to be established with alternative checks that the problem has been fixed before investigating if there is a problem with the warning light itself.

Not sure but sounds like low oil pressure, you need to stop and check the oil level

I have 2002 gmc envoy, oil pressure low, stop engine warning only comes on when i stop on a hill?

The pressure regulator in the oil pump may not be working, the idle speed may be too low and there may be a lot of wear on internal engine parts lowering oil pressure

Low oil pressure warning comes on

Make sure oil level is full, possible faulty oil pressure sender. replace sender and recheck, if warning still comes up, possible internal engine issue.

Dont have manual and a light came on dashboard looks like oil can but not what is it

If the oil can light goes on, check the level in the crankcase by checking the oil dipstick under the hood. It may be low.

If it is at a full level, then the oil light may indicate low oil pressure. Change the oil and filter to see if the condition improves. If it doesn't, then the oil pump may be bad. One can test the pressure of the oil while the engine is running by putting a gauge on the area where the oil pressure sending unit is, and reading the value to see if it is within specifications.

Good luck on this repair.

Turned on 2009 altima was flashing oil pressure then oil fillter flashing warning had oil and filter changed 3 days ago ck oil it was fine turned off car what may be the problrm

sometimes the service technician fails to remove the old oil filter gasket. This causes a leak at the oil filter. This would cause a leak which would lead to low oil pressure and loss of oil. You would have to remove the oil filter and check for an extra gasket. Or perhaps the oil filter was never tightened. If you find one then just remove it and re-install oil filter. You will, however, leak a couple cups of oil so have a drip pan ready. You may have damaged your engine if you ran with no/low oil pressure for any length of time.

My car is Volkswagen polo 2001 1.4 automat. After driving 8-10 miles at a low speed(30-40 mile/h) oil pressure warning appear at the dash board. When I push the accelerator the oil pressure warning...

Do not assume that the low oil pressure warning is a false one or that you only have a faulty oil pressure sensor. Your engine may in fact be running with low oil pressure once the oil heats up and thins out. 8-10 miles of running is enough to get the oil hot. It is significant that you only get the low oil pressure warning once the engine oil is warmed up.

If the oil pressure in the engine is low, engine lubrication will be impaired and the engine can be badly damaged so you need to run an engine oil pressure check.

1. How long has it been since you have changed the oil in the engine? If it has not been changed in the past 6 months then change it and change the oil filter at the same time. You must only use the oil specified by VW for that particular engine.

2. When new oil is heated it thins. If it is old and contaminated it will be even thinner when warm. You will get less oil pressure when the oil is thin and hot and more oil pressure when it is thick and cold. Fresh new oil is a little thicker as it has not been diluted with petrol and other contaminants.
Oil pressure also varies with engine speed (RPM). At idle or low engine RPM the oil pressure is lower.

3. OIL PRESSURE CHECK
After the oil is changed the car needs to be run to check if the oil pressure warning still appears. (I suspect that it probably will). If it does appear then an independent oil pressure gauge needs to be connected up to the lubrication system in the car to check the engine oil pressure. This is best done when the engine oil is hot because this is when you are getting the low pressure warning. Any competent mechanic will be able to do this. ( The useless ones will not). The oil pressure can then be properly checked on the gauge at various engine RPM. If there is a low oil pressure reading from the gauge then there could be a problem with the oil pump, the oil pick up or the oil pressure relief valve in the engine.

4. You mentioned that you see the oil pressure warning disappears once you accelerate. I suggest this is only occurring because with an increase in engine speed (higher RPM) the oil pump speed is increasing and the low oil pressure problem is being overcome temporarily. However as soon as the engine RPM drops the oil warning will appear again which means the engine is running with below minimum oil pressure at that RPM.

Even when you get no warning, the oil pressure in the engine could still be running significantly below the optimum level.

5. It is possible that the oil pressure is fine and that the problem is an electrical gremlin as these cars suffer from a variety of electrical faults. However from what you have described I think there is a problem with low oil pressure in the engine and until it is properly checked it is unwise to assume that you are just getting false oil pressure warnings.

I hope this helps.

WARNING MESSAGE sTOP: OIL PRESSURE ...wHAT IS

Check your oil, it may be low if not the oil pressure needs checked. The sending switch could be bad or you have low oil pressure. If you have low oil pressure have it fixed ASAP. The loss of oil pressure can cause severe engine damage.
