SOURCE: Will a bad catalytic converter

you have numerous problems to address, the cat could cause the car to smoke, but only because something is getting in it, heating up , and causing the smoke, normally if its white its due to water, and blue or gray due to a fuel issue , as far as a head gasket, if it was bad your cat could be bad too, so could the MAF sensor,, the alternator could work into this mess just due to the sensors not providing the correct signals to be sent to the computer in the car ,, but I doubt its bad , it can be simply checked, if you have a known good battery ,, use a meter and place the leads on the battery terminals, you should see a reading of between 13.5 and 14.5 volts, ( with the car running) if you do the alt is good, if not,, its probably bad,, There are two common types of mass airflow sensors in use on automotive engines. These are the vane meter and the hot wire. Neither design employs technology that measures air mass directly. However, with an additional sensor or two, the engine's air mass flow rate can be accurately determined.

Both approaches are used almost exclusively on electronic fuel injection (EFI) engines. Both sensor designs output a 0.0-5.0 volt or a pulse-width modulation (PWM) signal that is proportional to the air mass flow rate, and both sensors have an intake air temperature (IAT) sensor incorporated into their housings.

When a MAF is used in conjunction with an oxygen sensor, the engine's air/fuel ratio can be controlled very accurately. The MAF sensor provides the open-loop controller predicted air flow information (the measured air flow) to the ECU, and the oxygen sensor provides closed-loop feedback in order to make minor corrections to the predicted air mass.

What would be causing what sulfur smelling exhaust smoke?

The Smell is-- Sulfur Dioxide-- from an over heated
Exhaust Converter

Yes-- it will be ruined soon

White Smoke all the time, could be a head gasket

It could also be-- lots of fuel-- that is overheating the converter

Have to look at fuel trim on scan tool data

My Durango has a smell and gray smoke comes out the tail pipe when I start it

Check for computer error codes with an OBDII scan tool - it'll probably tell you that the catalytic converter is failing, but it won't also tell you that your engine is probably badly worn so you're seeing oil smoke - when the catalytic gets hot enough, it fully burns off the oil smoke so you won't see it any more. Meanwhile, your oil level is probably dropping pretty fast.

New Toyota Etios, VD,KM 1100, observed thick white smoke from exaust pipe for @ 1 Min, while running engine on ideal.

the white smoke occurrence is due to unique Vehicle usageconditions like slow speed & Short trips drivingthe catalytic convertor is not able reach its optimum reactiontemperature. As a result, the Hydrocarbon accumulates in the Catalytic Converter. After sometime, once the saturation limit is attained, the accumulated Hydrocarbon
starts burning inside the Catalytic Converter. During this Chemical Reaction,Momentarily the white smoke is seen in the exhaust and is normal

If the Catalytic converter is gone in a Honda Crv 2003 model does the vehicle blow smoke from exhaust and have a louder sound from exhaust when over 3000 revs?

Its possible the catalytic converter is stopped up, or the muffler.
A mechanic would disconnect the cat and check for blockage.

white smoke is usually burning oil but if the catalytic converter was clogged then it could just be a build up of carbon and is normal though you should get the converter changed as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

White smoke from exhaust and smell gas fumes

A plugged catalytic converter can set codes, but I think we need to concentrate on smoke right now. That's not saying that the converter wasn't a partial, or the cause of the white smoke. Has your oil level or coolant level been going down, or up recently, since this all started ?
You say he cleaned all the insides of the catalytic converter out, so there is no blockage there now, correct? Did you erase the code when you replaced the oxygen sensor, and it came back again? Finally, if you have white smoke rolling out your exhaust, it is usually caused by oil or coolant consumption getting into the cylinder, which could also be causing oxygen sensor to foul up & cause a code. I'd concentrate on finding the cause of the white smoke first. Cooling system pressure test, engine compression check should tell you , but so should consumption of oil or coolant increase. If the problem originated at the converter (plugged) it may have caused a blown head gasket for one thing. I'll wait for your reply.
