Stuck in 4wheel drive??? help :)

I have a 2006 H3, with around 65,000 miles. I bought it from the original owner 6 months ago. It snowed pretty good this winter and I pushed the 4H-lock and it worked like a charm, plowing through the snow. Put it back in the 4H, and it worked like normal.... .... ..... that is until I went to park in a parking spot.... it jumped like it was still in 4wheel lock... So I re-engaged and disingaged the 4Hlock... tried reversing it for 1/10 mile.... lol... Had my local mechanic put it up on the lift and he said.... the 4h and 4hlock are engaging and disengaging properly.... but he agrees that it hops when in a turn on the ground..... Any advice? I hate to take it to a Hummer mechanic and spend $120 hr for them to drive it all day?

I also have a 2006 H3 doing the same thing. It started at 49,000 miles and I ignored it at first because it only did it once or twice a month. Now that it has 59,000 miles, happens all the time when I turn or park. I am seeking a mechanic who can fix.

When driving in 4wd engagement there is a problem in that the torque in the axles and drive lines is not dissipated on hard surfaces as the wheels cannot slip ( great for snow ice mud gravel and the like but a no-no on hard non slip surfaces
yes reversing it will relieve it but if on hard surface ,winds it up again in reverse
better to simply drive two wheels onto the grass verge of the hard surface and then kick it into 2wd
if the diffs are limited slip diffs then the antislip action in the diffs will be pressed very hard together and will produce problems on turning corners
you may have success if you get all 4 wheels of the ground on a hoist and let the wheels spin and then try to engage 2wd

SOURCE: 4 wheel drive not working

First, check the transfer case and make sure it's full.
If you have the electric shift system in your vehicle, a servo motor could be failing, or the switch may be going bad. Even the switches on these systems are expensive so good, accurate testing must be done to verify failure of anything before you start replacing stuff. If it's not electric, check linkage to transfer case... something may be loose and sliding out of adjustment. Todays systems are just too complex to give accurate answers without hands-on testing. Many times several different items can give similar symptoms. That is why most shops say "bring it in and we will look at it".
good luck

It doesn't take long to learn when and how to use your truck's 4WD system. Follow these steps and you'll feel confident about engaging the system the next time you need to get out of a slippery situation.

For a conventional system, where you can select 2WD or 4WD, the instructions refer to engaging 4WD. For trucks with permanent 4WD, they refer to locking the center differential.

Time Required:
varies
Here's How:

  1. Refer to your owner's manual to find out how to engage your truck's 4WD mechanism.
  2. When driving in snow, mud, or just going off road, shift into 4WD when you get ready to leave solid ground. If you have lockable front hubs, lock them for those operations.
  3. For severe conditions, use low range if available. Before shifting into low range you must either stop or slow down to at least 3 mph to prevent grinding gears.
  4. When you return to normal conditions, shift out of 4WD or unlock the center differential. If the shifter doesn't want to move from 4WD or the differential lock stays engaged, don't panic, becaue the problem is normal and is caused by pressure on the gears.
    • Try backing in a straight line about 10 feet and try to move the shifter again.
    • If the shifter still won't move, try backing in an "S" pattern while trying to move the shifter.
  5. If you have lockable hubs, don't forget to unlock them when you return to dry pavement.
Tips:
  1. Vehicles with permanent 4WD are set up for everyday driving, but not necessarily for maximum traction on slick surfaces. Engaging the differential lock increases the vehicle's traction capabilities.
  2. Do not operate a locked 4WD on dry, hard surfaces. Doing that could cause damage to the driveshafts, differentials or transfer case.
What You Need:
Owner's Manual

Good luck and remember to rate this solution.

Drove into snow. Stuck, rocked, got out shoveled got in and wouldn't start. elect is good. Could snow have damaged wires or starter? I was fine. Til I turned key off in 4wheel. Help.

Yes, Ed, the snow ( or water ) could have done some damage.
The water could have damaged the starter, or the starter solenoid, however, that would really be unusual because they are made pretty waterproof, since they sit near or on the bottom of the engine where there is often a lot of water.
I would suspect the wire from the ignition switch to the starter or the solenoid ( which is a small wire) may have gotten broken or knocked off, or perhaps if there might be a solenoid to the 4 wheel drive might have gotten soaked.
God bless your efforts.

How can i use the 4 x 4 in my 2000 grand cherokee laredo (6 cyl) i dont have the owners manual and i dont know how to use my 4x4 on snow or something like that

With the Jeep in park, move the left shifter to 4 wheel drive. Proceed to put right shifter into drive, proceed to drive. Only use 4wheel drive when neccessary...ie...snow, mud, use 4 wheel lo in steep incline or when really bogged down.

Hope this helps

I have a H3 hummer but my truck battery keep going dead and my battery is new and alternator is good

The batteries they put in the trucks from the factory ****. I went through 3 of them under warranty, they lasted 6 months a piece.

I did research to find who made the factory model. I found an alternative manufacture and bought their battery and I have not had a problem sense. I bought a Duralast from auto zone.
