You need to remove steering wheel and the turn signal switch in the steering column to get to the ignition switch.

probably are related ive done this twice it doesnt always work take the piece of key u have an clean with fingernail polish remover an then with q tips clean egnition best u can then apply small amount of supper glue an hold in egnition for about a minute then cross fingers an hope for the best good luck if dosent work get new egnition switch u have done all u can

I recommend you pick up the Haynes or Chilton's repair manual on your vehicle. That will provide the diagram and instructions on how to properly do the job you have in mind.

The egnition coils is mis fireing

My car is stalling to start. If I just hold the key, it will eventually catch and go ahead and crank. I've changed the crank sensor. Fuel pump is good. Any other ideas?

1972 VW Bug ignition switch

Put the Key in the ignition and turn the key. It should disengage the steering lock and you should be able to pull it out. Make sure you unplug the switch from the back.
