To change the oil pan gasket in a 93 Tercel

By ciortiz on Mar 27, 2009

" "
I have a 93 Toyota tercel. The oil pan gasket needs to be replaced.
How extensive is it to change the oil pan gasket in a 93 tercel? 1998 Toyota Tercel has Oil Leakages in Several Spots (according to my shop and based on a UV die oil additive examination):
- Oil Pan Gasket - Valve Cover Gasket - Distributor O-ring (I understand oil is not fed to the distributor but can get easily in there) - Crank and Cam Seals (I understand the timing belt may need replacement, however I am not sure what the labor impact is for replacing or not replacing the timing belt) - AC Compressor "Evacuation" & Refrigerant replacement (I was told that in order to gain access to one or several areas mentioned above, I needed to remove the AC compressor. Therefore, this line item was tacked on to my estimate)

I would suggest you purchase a Haynes Repair Manual .. you will find step by step for that and from a simple tune-up to an engine overhaul and everything in between. Great step by steps and pics/diagrams

Stock the car doesn't come with an oil pan gasket but you can order one from rockauto.com you don't have to remove the A/C compressor for any of the jobs you listed. If you want to change the timing belt you need to remove the plastic rock guard under the motor on the passenger side. remove the spark plugs and using the socket turn the engine from the crankshaft clockwise until you are at TDC on #1 cyclinder. (compression stroke) Next remove the upper and lower plastic timing belt covers. The idler pulley is the one with the spring. Loosen the nut and remove the spring then you can remove the timing belt. It really isn't that hard to do. Maybe one afternoon.

There is no oil pan gasket, it is RTV sealant. unscrew the bolts, pry the oil pan off. Clean up all the old RTV ( youll notice there is no old gasket hmm!) While your at it clean out the oil pan put the new RTV sealant on and away you go. Screw it back on and wipe off squeeze out. Head bolt torque 39 foot pounds, Do proper squence and the final turn is another 90 degrees, 1/4 turn.

Drain the oil, then remove the perimeter bolts to the pan. There is nothing in the way of dropping it down. Next clean the gasket surface, and make sure it is dry. The new pan gasket should come w/ plastic guides to assure proper installation. Then just put it together. Really quite simple, it can be done in a reasonable amount of time.
