Steering wheel smoke?

We're having the same problem with our daughter's '04 Grand Am. It first started a "clicking" noise like the turn signals are on, but they aren't, it's a lot louder and at a faster pace than the regular turn signal "noise". NOW, she's seen smoke twice (just a puff) from around the steering wheel, however, it doesn't smell like anything burning. We're having the same problem with our daughter's '04 Grand Am.
