Steering wheel smoke?

While i am driving i sometimes see a puff of smoke come from my steering wheel, what is it?

  • srpink Apr 06, 2009

We're having the same problem with our daughter's '04 Grand Am. It first started a "clicking" noise like the turn signals are on, but they aren't, it's a lot louder and at a faster pace than the regular turn signal "noise". NOW, she's seen smoke twice (just a puff) from around the steering wheel, however, it doesn't smell like anything burning.

i had this problem with my 2002 grand am 3 yrs ago, and am now having the same exact problem again after spending $900 the first time around! anyway, i was told it is puffs of gunpowder coming out of the airbag...it is not actual smoke. however, it does make me nervous when it happens, so i guess i will be bringing it in AGAIN. it is the multifunction switch and will be covered under waranty if you purchased one and are still within your waranty period.

If it has rancid acidic smell, it is wires burning. Please stop driving before the air bag blows up in your face. Bring to a shop to find it.

SOURCE: steering wheel smoke?

They will find the problem if they take it apart. Could be the airbag, horn, any controls on the steering column. It sounds like it may have some burnt wiring.

Hi Erin, I think you should take the vehicle to have a diagnostic scan carried out very urgently. Never ignore puffs of smoke or your family may be missing you! Regards John

1990 Dodge Spirit a couple of things not working

I think its only by happenstance that the smoke came out of the column at the moment you tried to start the car while it was running.
If you took apart the steering column I am sure you already have noticed that there are a billion wires, and doodads in there. Any one of those could have burnt and you wouldn't be able to tel right away by looking at them. The smoke is usually an indicator that your ignition has burnt up, but it could also have been a fused link, a wire you happen to miss during inspection, or any number of control switches inside the column. I would recommend taking it to a shop and putting it on a computer.
