Happens both while driving, and idle. momentarily I thought I had smelled something burning. I checked under the hood, and to my knowledge, nothing was on fire. When i pulled over, the car was shuddering as if it were about to stall. It felt as if the bottom of the car was going to fall out. Also, when i started the car to try to make it home, it made what seemed to be some sort of grinding noise as i shifted into 1st.

sound like the overheating of the engine did some internal damage. ethier an intake or head gasket or maybe even a warped or cracked head. worse case senero would be a cracked block. check the oil see if it looks milky like a grey sludge. most likely it is a head gasket. have a leak down test preformed to confirm. the labor for the head gaskets is 9 hours for 1 or 11.5 for 2. I would replace both and have the mechanic check the heads and block for cracks while he has it apart.

I had a bad air conditioner compressor that caused this same problem. It had almost completley seized and gave the car some real trouble starting. The burning smell I had was caused from the belt rubbing around the seized pully.
SOURCE: grinding noise while driving.
Possible causes:
a) a brake disc shield is too close to the disc, and it's coming into contact in the circumstances you outline
b) pebbles stuck between the disc shield and the disk
c) dried out wheel bearings
d) worn Universal Joints in the drive shafts
e) worn A/C pump
f) worn alternator
g) worn water pump
Is the noise still present above 15 miles an hour and past 1500 rpm when the clutch is disengaged (i.e. gearbox in neutral?). The answer to this question may help you to pinpoint the source. I know it's stating the obvious but the fact that you're hearing a grinding sound means it's caused by something that is moving relative to something else. Again this should help narrow down the cause.

sew them. something is stuck did you turn or anything in the wash?

Sounds like there is a blown piston, to be sure have a compression test done on that #2 cylinder, if the reading is low, then you'll know.
A friend of mine had a 95 that did simular things only a little more,
it started smoking, dash lights flickered, etc. Finally, he had to get rid of it, the piston rod went through the engine block.
