The fuse is the first thing to check. The brake lights will have a "hot at all times" fuse. Power there can be easily checked with a voltmeter or test light.
The brake light switch near the top of the brake pedal, will likewise have a hot wire to it ("hot at all times"). Pull the connector to the switch and check for power with a test light. From the switch, the signal goes straight to the bulbs. If you have power all along available and still no lights, the ground for the brake lights needs to be found and checked.

No brake lights

Check the fuse in the fuse panel under the dash. Check the brakelight bulbs and see if they are good, it is unlikely the bulbs will both blow at the same time, it pays to check them. If the fuse is good, then the brakelight switch is bad under the dash,on the brake pedal. If you haven't done these repairs before, it is very tight getting under the dash to get to the brakelight switch. You may want to take it to a shop and let them do it.
I hope this has been helpful.

When I step on the brake the cruise control will not disengage

There are 2 switches at the brake pedal. 1 is the brakelight switch & the other is the cruise disengage switch. Possibly 2 faulty switches but you should diagnose first. Check brake light fuse, then disconect brakelight switch, bridge plug brakelight switch if lights come on = faulty switch, check globes

No rear signals or brakelights except third brakelight

TURN ON IGNITION SWITCH,GET A GOOD FUSE TESTER, CHECK ALL FUSES INSIDE THE CAR & UNDER THE HOOD. THE FUSES CAN ALL BE CHECKED WHILE STILL IN THE FUSE BOXES THERE ARE TEST POINTS FACING OUT ON EACH FUSE. POWER ON ONE SIDE OF THE FUSE, BAD FUSE. POWER ON BOTH SIDES, GOOD FUSE. NO POWER ON EITHER SIDE , SPARE FUSE.

I have a 2001 Subaru Outback wagon, LL Bean Edition. I just noticed that the left rear brakelight, tail light and blinker light do not work. I replaced the brakelight bulb but the brakelight does not...

Owners manuel chapter 11 & 12 should show you the fuse box placement and layout..there are two fuse boxes, inside behind the coin holder to the left of the steering wheel, slide out the holder..I believe #5 on the fuse box is the fuse for tail/brake lights. Also under the hood in the engine compartment on drivers side there is the main fuse box.

Taillights will not work, but turn sig, brakelights work, fuses are all good

Some makes and models have different taillight bulbs and brakelight bulbs. in other words your turn signals and brakelights are on one bulb and the tailights are on another, or they have multiple filaments and one of them could be bad
