At 70 mph on freeway van made a wooshing sound and I had 8 to 10 seconds of white exhaust smoke then clear. I has A/C on and got burnt rubber smell. A/C had whining noise for weeks prior to this but cooled ok. I was able to drive 5 more miles then parked it. I checked under car and found a few drops of oil like substance . One drop had greenish color. Front of car inside hood showed wet spots and looked like someting sprayed near alternator. Is car safe to drive? Is this a catastrophic event? Car starts, no engine light comes on, it appears ok but I am afraid to drive it and make things worse. Any ideas?

If you've narrowed it down that far, it sounds like either a headlight relay (not all vehicles have them, but some do) or the switch itself. It would be worth getting a Haynes manual at this point (they're about $19 at a parts store) - that'll show you locations of any relays as well as wiring diagrams and how to disassemble a lot of the vehicle, in the event you have to replace the switch itself.

the intakes go bad on these engines....... they leak coolant in the cylinders and cause a hydro lock that causes the rods to bend making the piston skirt hit the crank......" clicking noise" theres a law suit in progress for this issue......... you can find info on the internet

Oops! Sounds like your engine block is cracked,or your engine heads are warped, or you need new head gaskets. The cheapest problem is the last one. However it still is not cheap. Most head gasket sets cost at least $100 or more. To see if you need head gaskets, after running the car for about 15 minutes, pull out the oil dipstick and see if you see oil or water bubbles on the stick. If you need head gaskets check ebay for your model, that's likely going to be your cheapest source. Also possibly the engine blocked is cracked internally. That explains the loss of oil AND coolant out the pipe. But this also comes with overheating, so if your car is not overheating then this may not be the problem. First advice: BE REAL CAREFUL! CONSTANTLY STOP TO CHECK AND ADD OIL AND COOLANT until you fix the problem. Another advice, take your car to a reputable repair shop and have the engine pressure tested for leaks to find the source. WARNING: Do not use engine block leak sealers, they mess up a lot of stuff on your engine, especially the radiator heater core.

lack of service probably the cause try thicker oil or stp engine wear oil has it been stood for a while? if so recomend new oil and filter make sre you flush old oil out with cheap oil then proceed with oil change you can use oil flush too the oil should be golden once started after a week check oil again for signs of emulsification on the cap
