I just got an 18ft boat with a 2002 90HP mercury saltwater.... Starts up perfect. Everything works fine in neutral... It revs up and sounds great. But when I put it in gear it just doesn't put out any power. Not even enough to get the boat on a plain. Doesn't sounds like its revving at all but in neutral it revs fine. Please help!

Sounds like third gear is gone, You will have to see a dealer or trans shop for that on.

SOURCE: speedometer doesn't work and it

vehicle speed sensor on the transmission, it fails and the speedometer will not work, it could affect shifting because the computer does not know the speed you are traveling

If your airbag light is on, I think it is probably the clock spring. These are fun to replace. Go pick one up at a parts store for around 30 bucks and borrow their steering wheel puller. Disconnect your negative cable then wait 2 minutes so the airbag doesn't knock you into the back seat when you work on it. Take a socket set and remove the air bag, should be two screws. (Carefully!) Remove clips holding it in. Then sit it down always pointing it away from you. Then remove the steering wheel. Take the three screws (phillips head) out from under the cover to the steering wheel housing then remove the clock spring. Replace it the same way just go backwards in steps.

1995 mercury 150 horse runs great idols great but very slow .when put in reverse quits seems like to slow idol . what screw do i turn for fast idol

Seems like your are describing a outboard motor. If so, the Boat section of Fixya may have more experts that you need. You would want to avoid turning any screws on the carburetor body. The externals on the linkage have some adjustments like throttle stops.

The linkage on boat shift mechanisms are tempermental. They usually combine 2 functions on 1 control lever. They are synchronized that when the transmission shifts from neutral to forward and neutral to reverse the idle speed is low. This keeps the gears from grinding and takes the shock out of the shifting process.

Another thing different than on a car engine is the effect of the propeller on engine rpm. You can change the "in gear"
rpm for both directions by changing prop size and/or pitch.
This also means you can over-rev the engine by having the wrong prop on the boat. There are engine rpm "stops" for the high end too, but some just rely on using the correct prop. As what you may be experiencing with a "stall" can be brought on by

A word of caution. The inboard/outboard engines can have the same problem as outboard engines. The shift levers are synchronized with a pivot system and adjusting the throttle can interfere with the shifting.

I have a 2001 Mercury Cougar. It throws code p1780. I have replaced the Neutral Safety switch and still throwing the same code.

The overdrive button is different than a neutral start switch. Your problem could be underneath the car where the transmission wires plug in.

Intermittent starter issues. On my boat it very hard to access the starter and solenoid. When my boat starts it runs perfect. I can start and run it and shut it off numerous times. Now twice it has refused...

replace the solenoid, but,if you are worried about being stranded, while you are there, replace the starter and on all connections, use electrical grease,to keep corrosion away, always use lock washers so nothing gets loose too.

Where is the neutral safety switch on a 1997 mercury sable?

It is part of/incorporated into the transmission range selector switch. The switch is under the hood on the transmission where the shift cable connects to the shift post. See picture

My 2006 Mercury mariner keeps dying at stop signs.

Do an upper intake clean that will clean the throttle body and the Idle Air Control valve. Also clean the mass air flow sensor

1987 Topaz, has trouble accelerating.

Most likely it is a transmission problem. Being that old the transmission needs work and possibly the clutch replaced or Throw-out bearing.

92 ford explorer. runs great. replaced vaccum modulator recently. shifting from park to drive the engine revs up ( 60% of the time) and its like in neutral. then i shift back into neutral and wait till...

Sounds like the filter in the trans is plugged up. Should flush trans every 45,000 miles and replace filter and fulid. Its easier to take it in to a shop and have it done they use high pressure flush which will clean out the whole thing for about $200.
