The clutch is hydraulically operated.
You may have some broken band springs on the pressure plate; if so, it is going to get much worse as others break too. The throwout bearing could also be disintegrating.
Diagnosing the exact problem will almost surely require pulling the transmission.

You blew the clutch cylinder or the related slave cylinder.  Refill with brake fluid and check for leaks and remember to bleed out the air.

What does it mean when the clutch pedal is stuck

When that happened to me, it meant that the clutch cable was broken. I had to drive through San Francisco without putting in the clutch... Fun.

Vw golf mark4 over revs

Hello James,

If the engine revs up with no increase in speed, your clutch is slipping. Probably the reason the car was sold!

Clutch on my golf gti turbo

it is the clutch.
theres nothing else you can do but replace the clutch.
as to the kind of clutch i would use original equipment to replace with.
be very carefull with after market stores.
there are better parts you can use but you must look into other clutchs that have been used and decide for yourself which one is best for you.

just a thinker for you.
if it is a 2000 car and this is its first clutch original equip allready proves to go this long.
dont get a kit that will need to be done again in 10000 miles cause a racer says its an awesome kit.

labor on that is expected to be in the 290 350 range.
parts on this is about 360 490

pilot bearing
throwout bearing
clutch plate
clutch disc
have all four parts replaced
no questions asked if they cant do the job right then find someone else.
dont short yourself on this job cause you will kick yourself later.
