Overheating I have a 2002 Grand Am GT. It has the 3400 motor and overheats within 5 minutes of running. I have changed the water pump, thermostat, radiator, water rail (that goes to the heater core). I have flushed the heater core with water ( both ways) and it flows thru it fine and clean. When it overheats both heater core hoses are hot ( one more than the other). In the antifreeze overflow canister (i guess that is what you call it) it has two smaller lines. one goes to the radiator and the other to a metal line that goes to the upper hose. both of these are steaming hot. I have bypassed the fan and it still overheats with the fan running. It blows no heat. I even hooked a water hose directly to one of the heatcore lines and it pushed water thru the whole system and kept it cool. as soon as i hooked it back up it overheated again. Help I'm running out of idea's. Thanks, Todd

What about the radiator cap?, Try this procedure:

  • Dirt and debris can get lodged in the radiator air flow paths. This can block the radiator and cause your engine to overheat and damage the engine.

  • The thermostat can be stuck close. If you feel the upper hose very hot and the lower hose cooler than normal, it may be a stuck thermostat.

  • Make sure the radiator and the overflow bottle are filled to the proper levels.

  • Bleed air from the coolant system:This is best done by running the engine with the radiator cap off until you see when the air bubbles stop coming up.

  • Check the radiator fans: The easiest way is to turn on the cars air conditioner and turn up the A/C fans. Both radiator fans should come on when the A/C starts

  • Make a pressure test by using a pressure testing tool (available at most auto parts stores). Use the pressure shown on your radiator cap. Most cars are 16 PSI or less, so don't exceed that pressure. Replace the radiator cap if it doesn't hold the pressure.

Did you bleed air out coolant. if you did check engine oil when engine cool .could have a blown head gasket. if it look like milk shake . head gasket leak . reason blow no heat check see heater blower motor working.if yes . heat control unit or heat door not open in dash vacuum line to heat door actutator could be leaking.

make sure you got 50 / 50 mixture . half water and half antifreeze.i seen cases too much water will cause engine get hot enough to catch fire. when you put half antifreeze it raise boiling point .so engine wont get too hot.

you cannot be a pontiac mechanic. You did not mention the fact that when you disconncect the battery cable you will set off the radio theft alarm thereby totally screwing your car, nor did you mention that when you mess with the electrical connects with the blower moto you can st off the air bags!!! a very hefty price tag...where di you get your experience?? cracker jack box

1999 grand prix gt overheating. Changed thermostat, water pump, upper radiator hose. Please help!

does the upper and lower hoses seem to be the same temp when car begins to overheat? ore the radiator cooling fans coming on before the car overheats? did you pressure test the cooling system and radiator cap? also may want to remove the lower hose and flush the radiator. is the check engine light on and does it run bad?

No heat also overheats within 5 minwhen i drive it. new radiator new radiator cap new themistat.

seems like you might have a bad head gasket remove radiator cap and let it run. make sure the antifreeze is flowing if not it could be the water pump prop many car makers are using plastic props and they fail with time.also very possible that thermostat is bad was it overheating before it received a radiator ,cap and thermostat if so it is between head gasket.,and water pump but if you have no flow it is possible that the water pump prop is broken .there is head gasket test that can be done most shops have them and cost a little to do.to be sure.

Sounds to me like the impeller in the water pump is corroded bad enough that you now have no volume of water flow.If a pressure test on the cooling system shows no leaks and the rad fan does in fact run then this is the most likely solution,if the fan does not run you may need a temperature switch or a fan motor.

My 2002 Grand Prix is having a overheating

you probably have a stuck thermostat, it is under the throttle body on the drivers side, pretty difficult job if you are not an experienced mechanic

99 grand am gt overheating changed thermostat and

try priming the engine block & radiator with water though the hose's & any hose you can squeeze to pump out the air lock with the filler cap off when running, sounds too much air is is in the system & the pump won't work dry.
I had this problem a few times & I ended up practically forcing water into any hose I could re-attach quickly using a garden hose, as the heating system need's priming too !
