Hi, i'm having trouble starting my '98 Avalon. It has 280k on the odometer and has always been maintained in top condition by the previous owner, who happens to be the original owner. When i put the key in the ignition and turn it to the "on" position, all the warning lights/Radio/clock start to blink a couple of times and then die off. I also noticed that the clock and radio presets revert back to default. Oh, and obviously, the car won't start. One last thing i noticed is that the car can't unlock all the doors except the drivers it seems. I'm no mechanic or whiz (hence why i refer to you), but i'm definately sensing something electrical, perhaps the battery's dead although it's only 3 years old and had no apparent reason (no lights were left open) to drain all of a sudden.
Make sure the battery is good and is fully charged
It definitely sounds like a weak battery issue. Ck your connections at the battery for cleanliness & tightness. U need to have the batt checked along w the charging system & ckd for electrical shorts. If no problem is found that is the starting line. It may be a prob in the ignition system etc. if the problem isn't found by here. Good Luck

Hello. I will try to provide assistance to you, with the hope that you will give me a FixYa rating for my advice.
First, as a Toyota Service Manager, I can ASSURE you that there is NO "minimum mileage" before a dealer will look at it. That is a direct VIOLATION of the Direct Agreement between Toyota and the dealer body.
Second, what I would do is call this number : 1-880-331-4331
That is the Toyota Customer Experience Center. Call them, explain your situation and the dealership that is refusing service, and the CEC will get in touch with that dealer, and inform them that they HAVE to look at your car. After you call, expect a call from the Customer Relations Manager at the dealership in question, within 3 business days after your call to the CEC.
I hope that the dealership gets your car fixed up for you.
Please feel free to respond back, if you have any other questions or concerns.
Thnaks for choosing FixYa fore assistance!

I've had similar problems with my cars, and everytime it was a bad ground or power wire, or corrosion on the terminals. Get a wire brush and clean both battery connecters..even a little corrosion can cause a no power situation. If you have a test light, connect the ground of the test light to the negative cable of the battery and touch light to the positive cable...if the test light doesn't light up, then you have a break or lose connection in your ground wire. Trace the battery ground to the engine block and clean that also...the smallest thing can interupt power...hope this helps..

You can take your vehicle title to the Toyota dealer and tell them the problem and perhaps they can cut a master key for you. The key you have may be a valet key. Either way, they will certainly be able to tell you what must be done. But you have to take the title to prove the car is yours or they might not be able to help.

matt
