I have a 1989 Chevy Caprice Classic 5.0 V8 and recently had my JVC head unit installed. When i left my friends house the lights on warning chime continued to stay on the whole time i had my lights on and the fuel gauge says the tanks empty when i know its not. Before me and my friend installed the head unit which I am experienced in doing everything was working. I only want to take the head unit out as a last resort, if you know what i can do to fix both these problems let me know.

Try replacing your fuel pump relay, Its common on chevys. Those fuel pumps are too expensive to keep replacing
SOURCE: fuel gauge doesnt work
The fuel gauge in the fuel tank is simply a float connected to a bar connected to the sensor. Take a look at that and see if that float is stuck in one place causing a false reading.

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.
SOURCE: gas gauge malfunction and engine light stays on
This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!
SOURCE: my car fuel level gauge sometimes goes to empty
Mine too! I have a 2007 Chevy Malibu also and I knoticed it does that or bounces up and down once my tank gets to half full. Have you found a solution? Sometimes my check engine light comes on and sometimes it doesn't.
