Coroded wires or a bad relay would be my first check.

It it won't crank in park but will crank in neutral, the problem is the neutral safety switch on the transmission.

An engine needs three things to run : Fuel, Compression and Fire. Check to make sure you are getting fire to the spark plugs. The fuel pressure regulator on the injector rail may be bad. There is a schrader valve on the injector rail, check to see if there is fuel there. It is a valve like a tire valve, depress it slightly to see if there is fuel there.

SOURCE: 1966 Mustang 289 V8 auto 2b new battery and solenoid-won't crank

Check the battery terminals. If they have become corroded you could be getting a bad connection. When the starter is engaged it creates such a power load at the connections that it will arc and loose power. Or, you could have a bad ground wire off the battery. Also check the positive cable leading down to the starter. Most of the mustangs had the battery cable leading to the starter between the engine and the exhaust manifold. Eventually they melt through and can cause a short. This would require replacing the cable. Good luck.

SOURCE: 1979 Ford F150 4x4 auto 400 - won`t start.

If your starter is turning but not turning the engine over then the "bendix drive" in the starter needs to be replaced. This requires disassembly of the starter once it is off the truck. Usually the best bet is to replace the starter unless it is new in which case the bendix is probably defective.
It's a remote possibility that there may be damage to your ring gear on the flywheel, but that can be checked when you have the starter off the truck. Just look at the teeth in the starter hole and make sure none are missing or chipped or narrower than the rest. They probably are but it doesn't hurt to check. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: the car won't start; lights,

Check the starter and the starter relay or fuse. A client of mines car was doing the same thing, it ended up being two issues, the starter not working anymore, and a relay that was bad. If I am not mistaken everything should be labeled in the fuse box under the hood and will tell you where the fuse/ relay is for your vehicle

SOURCE: ford taurus 2001 car start but once the car is cut off it won't start up again until it cools off the car is not running hot.

After you kill it, when you try to start it back up, does the starter turn the motor? Or is it froze up (will not turn over)?

Park neutral safety switch maybe be the reason for the no crank ! Try putting the vehicle in park ,then try to crank the engine . Testing the electrical circuit is the best way to trouble shoot this problem , along with do a voltage drop test on the starter circuit ! This will test the battery cables an connections .

How to voltage drop test starter motor circuit
Does it have a manual or automatic transmission ? Manual ? clutch switch . Looking at a wiring diagram I also see a starter cut relay !

She almost starts, then dies.

No on the question about the starter being the cause.
You said you poured gas in - I assume you mean in the tank.
If it sounds like it wants to start we will assume the plugs are getting spark from the dist cap. If the pump is failing, you may not have enough fuel pressure.
I would either check fuel pressure or pour some fuel into the throttle body and try it. You could also use carb cleaner in a spray can.
You need to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem to proceed.

Volvo XC70 2002. Engine starting difficulties

The Volvo mechanic may be right. That does sound like the symptoms of a "dragging" starter-one that may have a worn bushing allowing the starter motor to move around too much inside the starter case. My only other thought would be a timing belt off by a tooth or two. If the engine runs well and smooth and has good power and acceleration, however, I think you could rule out a camshaft timing problem. A rebuilt starter or one from a salvage yard would be half the cost of a new starter, and maybe 1/3 or 1/4 the cost of a Volvo dealership starter. Are the parts as expensive as I have been led to believe?
As to your concern about the cranking damaging the car, I would not be too concerned. Only operate the starter for no longer than 10-15 seconds at a time, then let it cool down a couple of minutes before trying again. You won't damage the car, you will only shorten the starter's already short life. Once you have the problem fixed, have the oil and filter changed, in case all that cranking let unburned gas slip down the cylinder walls and into the crankcase, thinning out the oil.

Truck has electrical power but won't turn over. I think I can hear the starter solenoid engaging. Not sure. where do I start trouble shooting?

Safety first!--Make sure you're in park & brake on-- Try shorting across the starter terminals with a screwdriver,if the bendix kicks in & nothing spins, remove the starter & put in bench vice ,(or hold down securely), & jump with cables.--REMEMBER POLARITY--If the starter spins you are in deep *******---something in the motor is probably locked up.(If the starter doesn't spin get a new one.)

If he installed a new or remanufatured starter, I would suspect a weak battery possibly. If he installed a used starter, I would say the starter is bad. A hot engine is harder to crank than a cold engine and if the starter is marginal it will act the way you described. Try boosting your vehicle the next time it's hot, or get your battery load tested by a reputable shop that doesn't sell batteries. I have had experience with remanufactured starters that were no better than the unit I removed from the vehicle. Have him get a second reman and see if that doesn't solve the problem.
