Cigarette lighter shorted out trying to get a penny out.

In the time it took me to get a penny out of the cigarette lighter, it had shorted out, started to smoke and also melted the fuse going to the lighter in the fuse box.

Tried another fuse, but it blew the instant I put it in.

All electronics in the front are now inoperable. Worried something expensive went out.

Any ideas?

Do I need to take it to a Cadillac dealer, or can this be fixed by any mechanic?

Put a circit breaker in place of fuse. use a regular compass and run the compas around wiring and if compas moves thats where the short is within 6 inches. shorts create a magnetic feild

    Watched Utube on how to change fuse on a 2004 and where the fuse boxes are yea there are two fuse boxes

Penny dropped into the cigarette lighter of my 2008 saturn astra. I got the penny out, but the cigarette lighter doesn't work
hi,

there must have been a weak connection somewhere in the line.
use a volt meter to trace from the lighter to the fuse box.
I have also seen the wire connection go bad during a short in the back of the fuse box itself where the wire goes in.
follow the 12 volts and you will find your problem.

Dig the penny out first with something like tweezers..then change the Cigarette lighter fuse in your fuse panel. Location is on side of dash on drivers side behind the fuse panel. The cigarette lighter shares the same fuse as the door locks.

My 2002 Buick Century keeps blowing out the 20a fuse for the door locks. This dosn't happen right away but maybe the second or third time I use the remote switch.
The circut is being overloaded.I beleive the cigarette lighter,the power mirrors and maybe the trunk release is connected to this circut.If there are any problems with any of these items the use of the doorlocks will overload it.GM always had problems with their cigarette lighters shorting.If none of these items are faulty.Have the door lock solenoids checked

My kid put a penny in the cigaratte lighter of the car.
This is normal. Your cigarette lighter fuse is most probably blown and needs replacement. Check out user manual for fuse number.
