93 Buick Regal sometimes starts, sometimes doesn't
My 93 Buick Regal has an odd problem. When I turn the key, most of the time it gives me a quick, single click, and then nothing, as if it is going to start, but something stops it right away. I can repeat this over and over, and it will do the same thing, but then without doing anything differently, it will completely start just fine (no odd cranking or any other problems, it starts as if there had been no problem whatsoever). Other times I will jump in the car and it will turn over right away. It usually takes anywhere from 1-50 tries to get it to start. I assume this is some sort of a connection problem, so I checked, cleaned, and tightened everything from the battery to the starter, and around that area. I've also read that there is frequently a security problem with this type of car, but all the cases of that I found said the ''Security'' light flashed, and mine only comes on for that few moments that all the dashlights come on when you put the key in, and then it goes off with the rest of them. Please help? Any suggestions?

Sounds like a classic starter solenoid problem. first check that the click is coming from the starter and not a sub relay. if the click originates at the starter, either change the starter solenoid or the entire starter. I recommend a starter simply because the brushes in the starter are likely worn and nearing the end of their service life, so it's worthwhile to change both as a unit!

The no start on the first try could be low fuel pressure. The check valve in the pump may be letting fuel drain back into the tank, or the pump relay may be bad. The pump gets power from the relay when you turn the key on, then from the oil pressure switch once the engine starts. How do you get the interior lights to go off ?
were you trying to start it before you removed the other battery? if so the solenoid is stuck. turn the key on and hook up the battery and let it start then turn the key off and let it die. the kick of it starting should knock the solenoid back like it should be. if it keeps trying to start you will have to pull the starter and replace the solenoid
It dosent need a new steering column. But It very well may need an ingnition position sensor. It is a sensor that identifies what position the key is in. Obviously if it was malfunctioning it would not recognize you have the key in the start position, and when it does it suddenly fires. I had a 95 Regal that had the same problem, not a cheap one but pretty necessary.
I have a 2003 buick regal. I found a small cover or tab about 3/4 of an inch square under the bottom of the steering column cover. If you remove that tab and take a thin object , like a phillips screwdriver and shove it up that hole it will release the ignition so you can turn it back and pull out your key. What a great discovery!
