Bryon Thanks for the tip,I am at the point where either I cut the drum in half or the axle,It would be better with the drum, and when I pulled the front wheels off,to check the brakes there,I had to get under the auto and drop kick the hell out of the wheels to get them off,it makes me wonder where this poor car has been.I picked it up for a hundred bucks and it drove home.So go figureBryon Thanks for the tip,I am at the point where either I cut the drum in half or the axle,It would be better with the drum, and when I pulled the front wheels off,to check the brakes there,I had to get under the auto and drop kick the hell out of the wheels to get them off,it makes me wonder where this poor car has been.I picked it up for a hundred bucks and it drove home.So go figure

Does it have a dust cap in the center? If so, pry it off and remove the nut. It also might have a reverse thread (check). If it doesn't have the cap, then you might have to cut the drum in half. But I am almost positive that it does have the metal dust cap in the center of the hub/drum. I sincerely hope that this helped you. Let me know how things went. I'll still be here if you need me.

You didn't mention if you had a dust cap in the center of the drum. I'm hoping for the best and cheapest outcome for ya! Like I said, I'll still be here for ya if you need me.

That will do it though. I wish I were there to help ya! Just go to advance auto and buy a socket that will fit. If, you are going to keep the car. Shouldn't be more that 10 bucks or so to own it. Just a thought though. Let me know how things go after you take off the nut and remove the drum. Hope that everything is a breeze after that!

REMOVING REAR BRAKE DRUM SUB-ASSEMBLY
1. Release the parking brake and remove the rear
brake drum.
If the rear brake drum cannot be removed easily,
do the following:-
2.Remove the hole rubber and insert a screwdriver
through the hole into the backing plate, and hold the
automatic adjust lever away from the adjuster.
3.Using another screwdriver, contract the brake shoe
by turning the adjuster.
4. Take out the brake drum from the flange.
5. remove the shoe hold down spring cup, shoe hold down spring, pin and front side brake shoe.
6. Remove the tension spring. Remove the shoe return spring from the rear brake shoe and remove the parking brake shoe strut set.
7. Remove the shoe holding spring cup, shoe hold spring, pin and rear brake shoe.
8. separate the parking brake cable.
9. Remove the automatic adjust lever tension spring and remove the automatic adjust lever.
10. remove the C-washer and remove the parking brake shoe lever.
NOTE: Do not use any solvent like gasoline to wash the brake parts.
Always wear safety goggles and mask before using compressed air.
If the brake shoes have worn into the drum, you would need to turn the adjuster back to release the shoes. If the drum is stuck to the axle, you would need to spray the axle with penetrating oil and use pry bars to pry the drum off.
Probably a stuck shoe - may have to cut the cable to the drum to release or loosen the shoes from the backside. Could also be a rusty cable between the foot pedal and the drums.
Sounds like the emergency brake is frozen. You will have to remove the tire and brake drum to see what is going on. The drum will probably be stuck on due to the problem you are having. You will have to back off the star wheel adjuster to free up the brake shoes and/or release a stuck emergency brake cable. This will take more than a novice so you will probably need to get help. Good luck :O)
Is the
emergency brake on? If so release it the brake shoes should release the drum.
Second option is to spray some WD40 on the threads next to the drum and replace
the wheel putting the lug nuts on finger tight. Lower the vehicle and slowly
drive forward for a couple of feet and slam on the brakes, then do the same in
reverse. Raise the vehicle and remove the wheel and see if the drum is loose or
give the drum a couple of whacks with a rubber hammer.
TO REMOVE BRAKE DRUM.IF ITS HAS PRESSED METAL WASHERS.CUT THEM OFF.TO GET A STUCK BRAKE DRUM. OFF. REMOVE THE PLUG FROM BACKING PLATE.AND PUSH THE PARKING BRAKE LEVER OFF ITS STOPS.WITH A SCREW DRIVER AND BRAKE ADJUSTING TOOL.TURNING ADJUSTER STAR WHEEL UPWARD.TO RETRACT THE SHOES.THEN REMOVE DRUM.
It's probably the emergency brake cable that is stuck. Check that first. When I get a drum brake that is totally frozen up (like been sitting for 40 yrs) I often use 2 or 3 pry bars, WD40 and short handle sledge hammer to pry a little on both sides, liberally keep penetrating oil squirted on the shoes and tap on all sides. Eventually drum will come off, but sometimes it takes like maybe 1/2 hour. Shoes will have to be replaced, but they are probably shot anyway. The drums for the caravans are cheap, so I would not only get them, but the spring kit from the parts house as well.
