I have a 2011 Jetta TDI that fails CA smog test. The car is a 6 speed with only 37k miles. The.Smog shop said I needed to run a "drive cycle" on the car. What exactly IS that?

There are several monitors in your computer and whenever the computer is reset to turn off the check engine light, the monitors have to run a full cycle to show that they are good. Even though your check engine light might not be lit, the state will not pass emissions unless all drive cycles have been cleared. If you reset the check engine light, you might as well fix the error that caused it to light or you will not be able to pass the emission test. If there isn't an issue, you should be able to just drive for a couple of days for the cycles to complete.

Service engine light on-won't pass smog test

You will need to plug in a OBD reader first and run a diagnostic check. Without this we can only guess at what may or may not be wrong with it.

Can't reset monitors

you could have a break in what is called the keep alive memory power to the computer. each time you shut off the car the computer resets itself. the trick is to put enough miles on the car in one day and not shut off the ign untill you get the test done. or find the break in the keep alive memory wire to the computer.
good luck chris

1996 Nissan Maxima GXE Fail Smog Check Due To ECM System Failure

There is no way to fix this issue according to my Nissan Dealer Service Manager. The monitors will not run and therefore the vehicle will not pass smog. If you need assistance from California's SMOG authority they are called "The Referee" and you can call them at 1-800-622-7733.

2002 Hyundai Sonata wont pass smog

CA you can take the car to a referree and get a one time waiver if you have spent a minimum of $450 on repairs not including smog fees. Gives you two years to get it fixed. Smog Referee Call Center
Toll Free: 1.800.622.7733
You can also sell the car to the state for "up to" $1,000
