2002 pontiac gran am. son was driving. it ran hot. I put in coolent and check oil. no oil put in oil. tried to start it. car will turn over but will not start. getting gas, heard the fuel pump kick on. what could be the problem?
Check oil to see if there is rad fluid in it. if there is you have a cracked head or head gasket. if no rad fluid in oil, check for a spark.pull out a spark plug attach spark plug wire hold close to engine block with gloves and turn over engine. it is best to have someone with mechanical know how to do this,i.e. friend or nieghbor

Release the fuel pressure by loosening the gas cap, raise and support the car on jack stands, squeeze the plastic tabs on the male end of the connector, and pull the connector apart. Some models have 2 tabs, and others have 1 and the fuel line screwed into the other side.Remove filter mounting bolt, unhook tab from frame and remove filter. when you put in the new filter, make sure the arrow is pointing toward front of engine. On the line with plastic tabs, just push on till you hear a click, then pull on it to make sure it's latched.Don't forget to tighten gas cap.

Electric fuel pumps are known for burning out if you run them out of gas, pull the fuel line at the trottle-body, have someone turn the key on and see if you get fuel-flow, you may also check the fuel pump fuse and relay to make sure they are good.

Sounds like air in fuel line. Purge fuel line. By "crank", do you mean engine spins but won't catch? Try starter fluid in intake.
SOURCE: Here is the scenario...I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand
I would have the fuel pressure checked before buying a new fuel pump. Check the fuel pump for 12 volts too! If it is getting 12 volts, and no fuel pressure, replace the pump. If there is no 12 volts, check the relay, and fuse.
