is there a click click or no. if none then the starter motor is either not getting power or the solenoid in the motor has gone, if the lights dim on startup but engine dose not turn over starter motor has failed.
Well, a battery with insufficient cold cranking amps or CCA will cause such a thing or similar things to take place. Also a malfunctioning ECM/PCM may cause such an issue as well.
Here is the drill.
Start with the battery.
Undo the terminals and give them a good cleaning. (Until shiny metal is showing, no matter what kind of metal)
Also, check the cables in particular that go to the terminal clamps. Although the cables are usually good, certain things can cause them to fail, like corrode or break inside the plastic cover.
You would not see the problem as the wire covering ( usually black plastic) is covering the problem.
Then, go to the starter solenoid, which can be on the inner fender or on the starter itself.
It is cylindrical in shape, and has two large terminals for wires, one to the battery, one to the starter.
It can cause this problem, and your year of 2001 means it is inside the range of "could fail".
After that, the only thing left is the starter motor itself.
If you can take it apart, it perhaps it can be rebuilt, or maybe it can only be replaced.
God bless your efforts.
I sort of had the same problem....
turned out the negative battery terminal clamp was too corroded and all I did was re-strip the wire and buy a new clamp.
could also be a starter.
before i can go any further i have seen bad starter kill power to small wire, does not sound correct i know but it happens, remove the small wire from the starter and test it for power with key in the crank position.
if there is power at small wire when removed from starter then starter is bad. let me know the out come. good day
If it is getting power to the starter when You are Not jumping it Then the starter ie going out. Have a test light on the pos cable where it conects to the starter and have someone turn the key to the start position and the light should light up.If not test the starter silonoid.
Sounds like the S terminal isnt getting power. You have two power cable that go to your starter solenoid, a power cable that has direct battery power, and the s terminal which gives power when you turn the key to the start position. First things first, verify that its the problem. Use a DVOM and check the voltage to the S terminal from the ignition switch while trying to crank. You should see battery voltage. If you see none/low voltage then theres your problem. Check the voltage for the S terminal at the back of the ignition switch, if its battery voltage then there is a break in the wire, if its 0V then you need an ignition switch. Hope this helps!!
check the ignition switch to see if power is going through it with key on. if any other thing works with key on, then there is some power through switch. check switch power.
Yes. the starter is malfunction at this time. it could also be a ignition issue as well. here is a quick starter test procedure that will help you troubleshoot a bit.
Step 1 Check for 12 volts on the large wire attached to the top terminal on the starter relay. It should have battery voltage. If not, the battery, terminals or wire is bad.
Step 2 Check the small wire on the solenoid for power when the key is in the start position. Remove the small wire on the solenoid and have a helper hold the key in the start position. Check the wire for battery voltage. If there is voltage, the starter is bad. If there is no voltage, replace the wire.
Step 3 Check the fuse in the fuse box under the hood on the left fender well. If it is good, check the relay by pulling it out and checking for power at one terminal with the key off. If there is no power, the problem is in the fuse box between the fuse and the relay. If there is power, have the helper hold the key in the start position once again and check for power at another terminal from the ignition key. If there is power, the relay is bad. If there is no power, the starter circuit is suspect.
Step 4 Check to see if there is power to the neutral safety switch if there is no power at the relay. Use the voltmeter to check for power with the key in start. If there is power going in, check for power going out. If there is no power going in, the security system or ignition switch is suspect. If there is power going in and none coming out, the switch is bad. If there is power coming out, the problem is between the neutral switch and the relay.
Step 5 Remove the cover on the bottom of the steering column. Check the solid yellow wire for power when the key is in the start position. If there is no power, the ignition switch is bad.
starter ground/earth strap/cable is normally the cable negative that comes from battery and connects to the engine or where the trans joins engine ? also it may have a seperate strap connected from some location on the chassis and to engine if you trace neg cable from battery you will find where it connect to engine try at point rear of engine? ensue they are clean/secure starter motor takes its ground fro this ie engine--battery
