Hi need some advice please car had only done 16700 miles in 2001 when it had a blow-by test, the result was '20'LPM.
A good thing now is low sulphur fuel has been compulsory in the EU since 1st January 2000 .Serviced by the book at main dealers. Throttle body changed in 2000, Chains and tensioners done (top and bottom) in 2007. The engine runs smooth and fine no smoke, rattles etc, and does not use excessive oil. But !, It has flooded recently a couple of times had to call out for roadside assistance to re start !. The first time the roadside help blew off the airbox and trunking ! . Put Quickstart in a flooded engine I gather !. Had to be trailored to the main dealer to be put right, the association my wife was using had to pay for repairs that was 5 months ago, just after a dealer service.
Though on this last occasion and earlier in the sameday after already covering 7 miles, it stalled, just as my wife switched off the Sport mode, this was as she pulled in and ahead of the 3 lorries she had just been overtaking ! and managed to drive it in to the 'soft' shoulder off the dual carriageway . "Heart stopping for her !". It restarted immediately though, and she continued for a further 3 miles to her offices ?.
But, it would not start 9 hours later, she used the foot to floor method , no go . Now I had arrived on the scene to help ? we tried the removal of fuel pump fuse etc,and no go ! . Left it overnight till the next morning again no go, used the foot to floor method and also the removal of the fuel pump fuse both came to no avail that is when assistance was called out. The RAC (Master Technician) and knowledgably aware of the problems and foibles of the 98 model XJ8.(Works on NSX`s) (I worked for Acura Don Carlton OK City USA in 1999 for a short while) I digress !. The Technician said it was heavily flooded !. He said no problem and he would start it. So after taking the plugs out drying them and then put a drop of oil in each cylinder ,it started almost straightaway with just a few puffs of smoke from the exhaust from the oil dropped in to the cylinders. Whilst he was doing that I asked if I could use some of the "Quick start" in his truck , so I sprayed some on to paper tissue to clean out the throttle , as there was some discolouration inside and me also thinking maybe the throttle could have stuck ?.
Also this car I had put in for a service 5 months ago to a Main Jag dealer ! The RAC technician pointed out to me that 3 securing bolts where missing form the spark plug cover , a bolt was missing from one of the coils and that the trunking fitting on to the throttle body was attached by one bolt as the second fixing hole did not align to the throttle body ? Last but not least , he had to use an extension bar to remove the spark plugs as they had been put in so tight that it took "Carefull" brute force to loosen them !. "The last people to look at this car was the Jaguar main dealer".
The RAC Master Technician , he personally did not think it was a Nikasil issue , poor mixture and maybe the management system ?. And that the starter motor sounded tired ?.This was 5 days ago , since then and touch wood it starts fine. I took it it to an acquantance of mine a senior technician at a main Jag dealer 2 days later , told him the story as above I mentioned to him could it be the management system ? eg poor mixture , cold start, starter motor etc, and also that the car stalled on a main twin lane road . He dismissed my concern about engine management etc. So he did a Blow-by test (he said it only took 10 minutes?) and he said blue smoke came out the exhaust and that the breather pipe was oiled up and the LPM was 47,so must be the nikasil . But he did have a spare engine at home if I was interested ???.
The only times I have noticed 'smoke' myself , was with the road side assistance on this occaison after he poured oil in to the cylinders , of course there was a little bit on one occasion after I put a tad too much oil in, and I mean a tad. I don`t think I am being too dissmisive on this , I have 2 other Jaguars , and have owned a fair few in the past.
The point being the car is 10 years old though in good condition ,if it is Nikasil then it is only worth scrap is that correct (I never thought I would say that about a Jaguar), I would not sell this on to another person without them knowing ,if it is the Nikasil lining. Let me add before I forget, I bought the car for my wife thought it was good, as the Blo-by test was done in 2001 (20LPM) and after 1st January 2000 as low sulphur fuel has been compulsory in the EU since then !. So I did not think I had to worry about a Nikasil problem occurring.
Another thought, remember when we used to drop piston ring sealer down the cylinders (was it Holts ?) for the older engines, I could do that before taking her to the scrap heap see how long she lasts, nurse her along.
But before any drastic measures are taken be me, perhaps some advice from other drivers with similar problems would be most kindly appreciated.
I know poor starting can be a cause, but not the sole symptom surely, and then use bad starting as a reason to blame the Nikasil ? , then perhaps forced to sell the car at a loss or replace the engine ?, with the amount of engines that have been built with Nikasil, though this is surely a big problem world wide and a disaster for individual car and bike don't forget boat owners, again inevitably it should be far more recognised and known on a wider scale internationally. Not just a minority.
Kind regards to all Lance
