Sometimes when starting car it switches off doesnt recognise the key
Need to have some new keys made and coded up by a auto locksmith iam afraid ,keep the key away from any electrical source like a mobile phhone or a microwave
Testimonial: "Thankyou very much will try that :-)"
Your 1996 A4 has a separate immobiliser (during the 1999 facelift (I think), they incorporated the immobiliser into the dash module).
It is easily accessible under the dash above your right knee (on RHD models, may be left knee of LHD). It is a small white/cream rectagular box about the size of a cigarette pack - easy to spot.
The plug contacts into the module are coated with a different metal to the receiving contacts in the module, and they can react which interrupts electrical connectivity (long term).
Solution is to unplug and plug-in several times to get good contact - come electrical contact spray wouldn't go astray to help reduce the galvanic corrosion.either.
While under there, find the plug to the energising coil (the black ring around the outside of the ignition barrel which is what energises the transponder in the key), which should be under the steering column. unplug and plug this in several times too, as some people think that may also be a cause of intermittent immobilser issues.

you have the clutch switch mounted on top of the pedal, just like the brake, replace it....

HI,MARK,THE SIGNAL FROM YOUR KEY IS NOT GETTING TO YOUR IMMOBILIZER.THE PROBLEM IS MORE LIKELY AT THE PLUG ON THE READER COIL ON THE IGNITION.YOU WILL HAVE TO BEND THOSE TERMINALS SLIGHTLY CLOSED AND INSULATE THE WIRES SEPERATELY.THIS FEATURE IS PART OF THE VEHICLES SYSTEM UNFORTUNATELY,ANDY

I had the same issue with my '05 A4 1.8T. Turns out it was the RPM sensor. Audi tried to tell me it was teh fuel pump and the cam-shaft positioning sensor. Paid for teh fuel pump replacement and it died 6 blocks from the dealership. Then they replaced the RPM snesor, works great now... Except it's still an Audi.

I had this as well, but you just have to wait a second. You can't remove it to quickly, the car takes a second to essentially unlatch the key.
