Check engine light could be related to a bad gas cap or one that has not been screwed on properly. Remove, clean and replace the gas cap and see of the light goes out. It may take several minutes of driving to clear the error code.
Another problem could be a bad oxygen sensor. There are between 2-3 on each vehicle, and cost roughly $20 each. Before replacing any sensors I'd suggest taking the car to your local AutoZone and have them hook up their hand held diagnostic computer. They can read and interpret the error codes for you. Best of all it's a FREE service. They may have the parts necessary, or may tell you its a Dealer fix. Your under no obligation to buy anything.
Check your gas cap to make certain it's sealing properly. 7 out of 10 errors are related to a loose or missing gas cap. Clean the threads and screw it on until it clicks several times. See if the check engine light goes out in a few minutes.
