Question about Chevrolet Cars & Trucks
When obtaining a water pump for the 1998 Chevrolet 3.1 V6 engine, the only stationary part of the replacement pump is the front cover plate which along with the moving parts is bolted to the existing impeller housing. Problem: Coolant is leaking from a pin hole in the engine side of the housing. I believe that tomorrow's inspection is likely to reveal that the pin hole is from corrosion through the housing. Have any of you been successful sealing such a leak with an adhesive? Of course it would be better to replace the housing, but that will have to wait. I am also thinking of drilling through the pinhole and plugging the larger hole with a clamping type fastener (such as a tight-fitting bolt with nut and washers) and some sealant. Think field repair/pit stop vs shop repair. Suggestions from those who approve will be appreciated. If you have repaired such a leak in a similar manner before, please share with me what worked for you. Thanks.
