The sensor is what talks to the CPU not the temp gauge. You must be using a fair bit of fuel as it will be running rich all the time. Fix the sensor and run fault codes

SOURCE: chevy astro van turns over but wont start when

Check to see if the fuel pump is kicking in,
when you turn the key on without starting the van you should hear it kick on for about 2 seconds,

It could be...
A clogged fuel filter...
Blown fuse for the pump..or bad pump relay..
No gas
Bad fuel pump

SOURCE: 2001 astro chevy van 4.3 engines need to set the timing

The distributor in that engine can only be installed in one position. The hold down is built onto the distributor meaning when it is installed and the engine runs the computer is responsible for the timing. The distributor will move a little but won't correct major timing errors.

SOURCE: chevy astro van heater blowes only cold air

the problem is probably the heater core, it can become clogged with dribris. this stops heat from the engine getting to it and then no heat.

Why does my temp gauge rise to hot when the van is off - but as soon as the key is switched on it goes back to the cold end of the temp gauge

The gauge is unpowered when you turn the key off, so the needle can go wherever it wants to. When you turn the key on, the gauge gets power and will show the actual engine coolant temperature.

Our 99 astro van has been setting for about 4 months. It was in the shop for a ignition coil and back on the road. Now the heat will not work, the fan is blowing but will not heat up. also the temp gauge...

I am thinking the thermostat is stuck closed. Take of the top radiator hose and take off housing and put the thermostat in a pot and heat up to boiling temperature and see if it opens. If it doesn't replace it. This happens when a car is not used for a long time.

1997 chevy astro van has poor starting problems after it sits all

hello ralph...check the coolant temp sensor. It acts as a choke to richen fuel mixture when cold. If it doesn't work correctly, hard starting will occur. Once engine reaches operating temp, the problem is usually non-existent. also....
Worn spark plugs.
Fouled spark plugs.
Worn distributor cap and rotor.
Old ignition wires.
Low engine coolant level.
Faulty MAP sensor...any of these will effect cold starting....

Good luck...i hope this helps.

No heat

As for the fan your blower resistor is in need of replacement.
To address the heat problem I'll need to know a couple of things
1. Does your vans temp gauge read in the normal range or is it running low(after you've driven it for at least 10 min
2. Is the out side temp really cold?

could be a clogged fuel filter. How long since you changed it?
It is located bolted to the frame on the drivers side. They only cost $7.00 so I would try this.
