Question about Cars & Trucks

2005 silverado 2wd 1500 5.3 V8

I purchased this truck new in 05 and maintained it by the book. it has never been monkey'd around with and is 100% STOCK. The first time it died was back in febuary in a rough gravel road construction zone when I was coming home a gig around 3am. I called a tow service, but before they got there the truck started and I drove it for another 2 months with no problems at all. then yesterday the truck died when I got on a road that was rough as a cob. it eventualy restarted, but died again 2 miles farther down the road. I towed it home and pulled the bed off and changed the fuel pump assembly with a new unit. then tonight I was driving on a rough gravel road again, and it died and wouldnt restart. I left my wife with the truck and walked home to get my welding rig and tow it home. while I was walking my wife gave it a try and it started, she got home about the same time I was walking into my driveway. this is very stressfull, I bought a $350.00 fuel pump did all that work, and still not fixed... anybody have any advice here... Im about to go trade this thing in in a 350Z or something...

***UPDATE*** like I said, the check engine light did come on during one of the stop running episodes, so I drove the pickup over to Orilley's to check the codes with their scanner, and it showed an out of range crank sensor. I have purchased the part since it was only $50.00. I am pretty confident this will fix the issue, but will update in the future if this problem persists. thank you for reading. as always, This issue may have been caused when my transmission was replaced about a year ago, I suspect it is possible for a mechanic to accidentaly bump somethings when they r&r something as big as a transmission. or the plug and wire could be making bad contact... anyways thanks again to all for taking time to read about my problem...

No engine light on? Sounds to me like the bumpy road may be knocking something loose. It would help to know if you have fuel pressure when the problem arises.

Testimonial: "the engine light came on once, but went out after I changed the fuel pump. I agree, i will try to find or borrow a pressure gauge to check this while i am driving.. "

Truck stalls when on rough roads

The truck is probably stalling on rough roads because the fuel pump float is not staying on the surface of the gasoline in the tank. Therefore, it is taking on air and interrupting the flow of fuel temporarily. It may be sticking a little and operating too slowly.
The fuel pump is inside your gas tank but can be removed and replaced by you if you are skilled enough.

Where is the fuel filter?

I don't know about a 2wd,(mine is a 4 wd-extended cab) but, I just purchased an IN LINE FUEL filter from O'Reilly's Auto Parts. (02-01-2009 last night) The parts agent crawled under my truc and pointed out that the fuel filter was located uner the cab, attached to the drivers side frame, nearest to the back of the cab.
I might add, I had just checked with Advance Store Auto Parts, and the salesman there told me that there was not an external in line fuel filter, and I would have to get a complete fuel tank pump, filter screen assembly, from the chevrolet dealer.
I purchased a "WIX" in line filter and will put it on this p.m.
Hope this helps
