Well you should have a check engine light with a trouble code stored in the computer. The code would tell you which cylinder is miss-firing.
The reason could be a weak spark plug, coil, or fuel injector problem.

Vehicle is hesitating, like it is going to cut off.


There are a few things that can cause an engine misfire and hesitation. Does your van have a CoP ignition system? (Separate ignition coils for each spark plug) Or coil pack? You may have bad ignition coil(s); that would cause a misfire. If you have a dirty/clogged/leaky fuel injector for cylinder 3, that could also cause a misfire condition. When you replaced all the spark plugs, did you look at the plug from cylinder 3? Did they all look the same? Sometimes you can get clues to what is going on in your cylinder by how the spark plug looks: if it's white or glazed you are running too lean and could indicate fuel injection problem, if it's got burnt oil on it and it's sludgy you may have a leaky gasket or worn piston ring that is letting oil up into the combustion chamber and fouling the plug, causing a misfire. If your check engine light comes back on and it's the same misfire code, have the coil for cylinder 3 checked to see if it's weak or bad. Or you can do a home remedy check and swap a known good ignition coil from another cylinder to 3, reset the code, and see if the misfire moves to another cylinder. If it does, you know the coil is bad. You can pick up an ignition coil for pretty cheap on the internet ($30-$70) if that's the problem and they're simple to install (a pain if they're on a cylinder that's under the intake manifold, but just because you have to unbolt a bunch of stuff to get to it...time consuming but not too difficult). I have a 2001 Mazda Tribute and had a couple of ignition coils go bad, causing misfires. This seems to be a semi-common problem for early 2000's Mazdas.

Spark jumping from coil pack causing the engine to miss


Hi there:
Misfire is a common driveability problem that may or may not be easy to diagnose, depending on the cause. A misfiring cylinder in a four-cylinder engine is, pardon the pun, hard to miss. The loss of 25 percent of the engine power output is the equivalent of a horse trying to run on three legs. The engine may shake so badly at idle that it causes vibrations that can be felt in the steering wheel and throughout the vehicle.



Basically, it's one of three things: loss of spark; the air/fuel mixture is too far out of balance to ignite; or loss of compression. Loss of spark includes anything that prevents coil voltage from jumping the electrode gap at the end of the spark plug. Causes include worn, fouled or damaged spark plugs, bad spark plug wires or even a cracked distributor cap. A weak coil or excessive rotor gas inside a distributor would affect all cylinders, not just a single cylinder.


Lean misfire can occur when the air/fuel mixture is too lean (not enough gasoline in the mixture) to burn. This can be caused by a dirty, clogged or inoperative fuel injector; air leaks; or low fuel pressure because of a weak pump, restricted filter or leaky pressure regulator. Low fuel pressure would affect all cylinders rather than an individual cylinder, as would most air leaks. A leaky EGR valve can also have the same effect as an air leak. In fact, if a vehicle has one or more misfire codes and a P0401 EGR code, the fault is likely carbon buildup under the EGR valve.


Loss of compression means the cylinder loses most of its air/fuel mixture before it can be ignited. The most likely causes here are a leaky (burned) exhaust valve or a blown head gasket. If two adjacent cylinders are misfiring, it's likely the head gasket between them has failed. Also, if an engine is overheating or losing coolant, it's likely the head gasket is the culprit.

Intermittent misfires are the worst kind to diagnose because the misfire comes and goes depending on engine load or operating conditions. They seem to occur for no apparent reason. The engine may only misfire and run rough when cold but then smooth out as it warms up. Or, it may start and idle fine but then misfire or hesitate when it comes under load. Also, it may run fine most of the time but suddenly misfire or cut out for no apparent reason.

02 sensor p0136 and cylinder misfire p0300


Most likely you do not have bad O2 sensor or coil sience you have P0300 code.
Check for vacuum leaks first , this is very common problem(vacuum leak) , lean mixture will cause misfire. I'm tallking about V6 engine , 4cyl have same problems but for misfire it may have bad coil (they under recall now).
Also check condition of air mass sensor , if it's dirty ,
buy air flow sensor cleaner and clean it according to user manual on the can.(air mass sensor can cause
O2 sensor code)
Check vacuum hose to fuel pressure regulator.
There are many more things to check , but that for mechanic shops after you try this.

Acts like the knock sensor is bad. engine misfire on multiple cylinders.


The knock sensor will give you poor accelleration only when trying to drive at first when cold & the same when the engine is hot. If you have a misfire it will be something else causing that. A weak coil, Timing belt, a waek ignition module, & so on.

I have a 97 pontiac gp i had it scanned to see why my service engine soon light was on it came back that cylinder 5 was misfiring i changed the coil pack,plugs,and wires but it still say cylinder 5 misfire...


Replace your #5 cylinder fuel injector. You rough idle sounds like low, or no fuel to the cylinder. Your hesitation on accelleration says the same.. A new fuel injector should resolve your issue.

Any codes?Have you done tune up? coils, wires, fuel filter.
