a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

SOURCE: key turns off and kills the car
It does sound as the ignition device is bad, or just has a bad, disonnected or broken spring lock device.
Sometimes the Barrels as you call it are not so hard to remove, with some knowledge of how they are retained within the console. If in the dashboard, even more simple.
In many cases, if in console, there are removable panels to expose this and you can then see a retainer clip holding it in place. Once clip is located, remove it and unit slide out. Very similar to dash mounts. (sometimes dash mounts are buries deeper though)
If you are not very familiar with the mechanics of your car I recommend this link to obtain a service manual, ( http://www.pitstop.net.au/view/marques-holden/page/query/plu/8638/ )otherwise, if you feel mechanically inclined, start removing outer covers unit you expose the ignition cylinder, and search for the retainer.
Be sure to take care in removal of screws clips and parts so you can return them to the proper location in the reverse order they are removed.
Also be sure to have a proper working key for the cylinder, however, this does not mean the ignition key will then work for any other items it may have worked with before as some vehicles use one key and others, multiple keys for doors, trunks and so on.
Unfortunately in all my online searches I was unable to come up with any schematics on your vehicle without buying a manual.
Hope this helps
