Did you put an entire new distributor on the vehicle or just a cap and rotor? It sounds to me like your ignition is out of time. Make sure all of the plug wires are where they are supposed to be on the cap AND connected to the correct spark plug.

My problem was solved when I repaired my 4 wd activation dash switch. The switch was contacting on 2WD & 4HI at the same time. The front differential activation is vacuum activated possibly creating a tug of war that didn't actually engage it but drained off vacuum from the engine? A theory at best but stumbbled across it because I knew the switch wasn't working properly I repaired it and low and behold rough idle disappeared and all is good for 3 weeks running.

ok, common error. First group your bolts by their lokeness. length,diameter, and thread.. Then if you have 4 holes, find 4 bolts that fit. they should all protrude the same amount,about 1/2 in. Finger start only,about3-5 turns, use no tools. regardless of length if its in the right hole it will protrude the same as the others. Driy run if neededbut use no force on any of them. Good luck. You have leaks in your gaskets. or vacuum lines removed and not replaced or broken in the operation. trace air leaks with propane torch unlit. where engine speed increases, you have an air or vacuum leak.

What can cause the car not to start after changing the valve cover and intake gaskets?


Changing the intake gasket requires removal of distributor I believe. Did you get it back in the exact correct position?

Won't start


If it's backfiring through the intake, then more than likely it's a timing issue. The distributor cap has the cylinder numbers molded into it where the plug wires go... Make sure the wires are in the right spots. If that's good, then it's possible the distributor isn't lined up right.

How to replace a intake plenum gasket


Well basically, you remove the intake plenum and replace the gasket and reinstall the plenum. Here are the steps:

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the remote jumper terminal located at the right strut tower.
2. Remove the air inlet resonator and tube.
3. Remove the throttle actuator cables from the throttle arm and bracket.
4. Disconnect Secondary Runner Valve (SRV), Manifold Tuning Valve (MTV), Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), Idle Air Control (IAC) motor electrical connectors.
5. Remove the electrical connector and the Intake Air Temperature/Manifold Absolute Pressure (TMAP) sensor.
6. Disconnect vacuum hoses from the Secondary Runner Valve (SRV) reservoir, Speed Control reservoir, and PCV.
7. Remove right and left intake manifold supports.
8. Remove support brackets at the intake manifold front corners and MTV.
9. Loosen upper fastener attaching throttle body to support bracket.
10. Remove clips attaching EGR tubes to intake manifold.
11. Remove intake manifold bolts and manifold
12. Remove old gaskets, Clean gasket surfaces, and install new gaskets.
13. Reverse steps to reinstall manifold

IGNITION COIL REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
3.0L Engine
  1. Remove the wiper arms
  2. Remove the left and right side air inlet grilles
  3. Remove the wiper motor.
  4. Detach the power brake booster vacuum connection from the intake plenum.
  5. Disconnect the spark plug wiring harness from the ignition coil.
  6. Detach the electrical connection from the ignition coil.
  7. Remove the bolts from the ignition coil, and remove the coil.

To install:
  1. Installation is the reversal of the removal procedure.
  2. Tighten the coil bolts to 71 inch lbs. 8 (Nm).
  3. Tighten the power brake booster vacuum connection until snug.

RIGHT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the intake plenum and the intake manifold.
  3. Remove the spark plug boots from the spark plugs, and then the wires from the routing retainers. Make sure they are tagged for proper installation.
  4. Remove the rocker arm cover-to-cylinder screws, the cover, and the gasket/seals. Discard the seals.


NOTE Ensure all eight sealing O-rings are accounted for. They may stick to the camshaft bearing caps or fall into the oil return journals in the cylinder head.

To install:

  1. Install new valve cover seals. Lightly coat the new seals, including O-rings, with engine oil prior to installation. The oil application will assist in holding the O-ring seals to the valve cover.
  2. Apply a thin coat of silicone sealer at the front and back of the seals.
  3. Install the valve cover to the cylinder head, and tighten the bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4. Route the spark plug wires into the retainers, and install the plug boots to the spark plugs.
  5. Replace the intake manifold and the intake plenum.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
LEFT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the intake plenum and the intake manifold.
  3. Remove the spark plug boots from the spark plugs, and then the wires from the routing retainers. Make sure they are tagged for proper installation.
  4. Remove the oil filler spout.
    1. Unlock the tab.
    2. Twist counterclockwise.

  5. Remove the rocker arm cover-to-cylinder screws, the cover, and the gasket/seals. Discard the seals.

NOTE Ensure all eight sealing O-rings are accounted for. They may stick to the camshaft bearing caps or fall into the oil return journals in the cylinder head.
To install:
  1. Install new valve cover seals. Lightly coat the new seals, including O-rings, with engine oil prior to installation. The oil application will assist in holding the O-ring seals to the valve cover.

  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

INTAKE MANIFOLD REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

3.0L Engine
This vehicle uses a sequential multiport fuel injected engine. Fuel injector connectors must be positioned onto their appropriate fuel injector or engine performance and exhaust emissions may be seriously affected. Fuel injector connectors are numbered to match their cylinders.
  1. Remove the intake plenum.
  2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Remove the fuel supply and fuel return hose from the fuel rail.
  4. Fuel injector electrical harness connector.
  5. Remove the intake manifold bolts and the intake manifold.


NOTE Mask off the ports to the intake manifold spacer. If foreign objects enter the engine, severe damage may result.
Clean the intake manifold sealing surfaces with a non-abrasive tool or solvent.
Do not damage machined aluminum surfaces or improper sealing may occur.

To install:

  1. Remove the masking from the intake ports.
  2. Install the intake manifold, and tighten the intake bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm), rotating the tightening sequence.
  3. Reconnect the fuel injector electrical harness connector.
  4. Couple the fuel supply and fuel return hose,. Tighten the connection to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).


NOTE Counterhold the connections to prevent damage to the fuel rail.
  1. Install the intake plenum.
  2. Connect the negative battery cable.

Starter needs to be replaced. Need instruction procedure for a do it yourselfer.


Hi, I have pasted the procedure from autozone.com below. Because this requires removal of the intake manifold, please be as sure as possible that your starter needs replacement. If you have any doubt, please let me know what your symptoms are and what troubleshooting you have done that led you to believe your starter is bad. Also, if you have any questions about the procedure below, please let me know. Thanks for using FixYa.


Removal & Installation


Disconnect the Negative battery cable


Relieve the fuel system pressure (you can do this by placing a rag over the schrader valve on the fuel rail and pressing in the valve stem--just be careful not to spray fuel on your eyes).


Drain the cooling system.


Remove or disconnect the following:


  • Intake manifold heat shield
  • Sight shield
  • Coil module connectors from the coil modules located on the valve covers
  • Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose and valve from the valve cover
  • Fuel regulator vacuum tube
  • Vacuum tubes from the AIR solenoid
  • Fuel inlet and return lines
  • Fuel rail bracket retaining nut at the rear lift bracket
  • 2 pushnuts attaching the engine coolant heater wire and set it aside, if equipped
  • Fuel injector electrical connections
  • Fuel rail and injectors
  • Plenum duct clamp at the rear of the intake manifold, loosen
  • Intake manifold bolts and the manifold
Clean the manifold mating surfaces.


Remove or disconnect the following:

To install:

Install or connect the following:

  • -S- terminal wire. Torque the nut to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  • Starter electrical connectors. Torque the nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  • Starter motor
  • Mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).

  1. Grease the inside edge of the rubber plenum duct.
  2. Position the intake manifold by performing the following sub-steps:
    1. Place the rear of the intake manifold into the plenum duct.
    2. Place the front of the intake manifold downward on to the cylinder heads.

  3. Install the intake manifold bolts and torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) in the sequence illustrated. DO NOT torque the intake manifold bolts when the engine is HOT or at operating temperature.
  4. Make sure the plenum duct is fully attached to the rear of the intake manifold and tighten the plenum duct clamp to 20 inch lbs. (2.25 Nm).
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel rail and injectors and tighten the rail retainers to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) Fuel injector electrical connections Alternator coolant pipe/surge tank pipe and position onto the fuel rail studs Engine coolant heater wire onto the studs and install the pushnuts, if equipped Fuel rail bracket retaining nut at the rear lift bracket and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) Fuel inlet and return lines Vacuum tubes to the AIR solenoid Fuel regulator vacuum tube Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve and hose to the valve cover Coil module connectors to the coil modules located on the valve covers Sight shield Intake manifold heat shield Negative battery cable
  6. Fill and bleed the cooling system.

    rpms are about right. those engines have a plate that is bolted to the underside of the intake and its the size of the intake the gasket for them blows out all the time causing oil consumption and misses.
    easy check is pull pcv valve from engine and vent hose from other valve cover. start engine and block both valve cover holes with your fingers or whatever has to be a good seal. after after 30 seconds remove one finger from hole. if air rushes into valve cover that means there is a vacuum inside crank case and the only place it could come from is that plenum gasket.
    remove plenum[intake] and replace gasket.
    other problem that is common is a worn out block bushing.its the bronze bushing that the oil pump drive shaft goes through.
    to check remove dist cap, place the tip of screw driver on the rim of distributor were the center of the rotor tip is then rotate dist rotor back and forth to check the slack. if its more than 1/16 of an inch then the block bushing is worn if like 1/8 or more then the oil pump drive shaft gear will be ground down pretty bad the cam gear usually is ok but i have seen a couple get ruined. remove gear and pull out bushing with a puller that cuts threads into the bushing. there is a special tool kit for this but you can make you own except for the burnisher wich you really dont need.
    that bushing cause all kinds of havac from misses to extreme backfireing to wont run.

    Changing the spark plugs on a 2000 forerunner


    the upper intake plenum...you will have to remove the plenum to access the spark plugs...usually you are able to unbolt the plenum only and disconnect the front connectors and/or vacuum lines. and tilt the plenum up and out of the way to access the plugs... take care when doing this you can damage the engine if not careful. make sure you get a new intake plenum gasket...as well as the valve cover gaskets...the rubber rings that seal the spark plug tubes from oil tend to leak causing a misfire. you already have to pull the plenum might as well do the valve cover gasket while you are so far in it.

    Valve covers gasket leak oil


    To replace the valve cover gaskets on a Sienna: The front one is easy. The difficult one is the other side, closest to the firewall. You will need to purchase a new intake plenum gasket, when you buy the new valve cover gaskets, because you MUST remove the intake plenum to remove the rear valve cover. You can NOT get the back side valve cover off of the engine without removing the plenum. Trust me.
