It is above the drive shaft output from the gear box for the right hand wheel. (from the drivers' seat) or...looking under the bonnet: observe the two drive shafts entering the final drive of the gearbox: You will see an electrical plug above the driveshaft on your LEFT.
(The RPM pick-up is at the top of the bellhousing, immediatley above the flywheel ring gear.)

Speedometer not working on ford escort 1999

speedo works off one of the front wheels depending on your country, the signal goes to the abs unit then out of the abs unit to the speedo. the speedo could be at fault. or the sensor but if the sensor is at fault the abs light would be on so first i would check the single wire from the abs unit, clean the connections, the signal is a pulse. the faster the pulse the faster the speedo goes..

Why is the speedometer reading erratically?

Depending on the type an year vehicle an the electronics on the car , the instrument cluster could be at fault ! The stepper motor that moves the speedo could be the problem if a GM product ! As far as the speed sensor goes a few other things wouldn't work very well if it were bad an the check engine light would be on more then likely because this is an input to the PCM - engine computer ! The transmission would shift erratically !
Speedometer
The IPC displays the vehicle speed based on the vehicle speed signal from the PCM. The PCM converts the data from the vehicle speed sensor to a 4000 pulses/mile signal. The IPC uses the vehicle speed signal circuit from the PCM in order to calculate the vehicle speed. The speedometer defaults to 0 km/h (0 mph) if a malfunction in the vehicle speed signal circuit exists.
So I would say the instrument cluster is bad !

Speedometer and odometer not working told by previous owner he replaces vss also one sensor at rear of transfer case is not plugged in is this a common problem if so what is common fix?

What make and model? It is possible that the unplugged sensor is for the speedo / odo, since the pulses for the speedo and hence the odo is picked up from the final drive on the transmission.
Note, it is only a possibility, we need more information.

! change a old speed sensor for a new one in my Toyota pick-up 1992 but the speedometer still not work, somebody knows what can be wrong?

it is done completly by electric connection..? on a 92 pick up i belive it still has a speedo cable located at the tail of the tranny.. either the gear is bad or the cable is broken ..if it has cruize control there are two cables one tranny to cruize box and then cruize box to speedo

Speedometer works at first then go back to zero

Sounds like a typical transducer fault. The transducer sits on the transmission and sends pulses to the speedo head.

Non working speedo in 88 chevy pickup

Did the transmission you put in have the the pick up on the output shaft. Pull out the vss and see if the pick-up is on the shaft or a speedo gear is on the shaft. If it has a gear, you will have to change it to a pick up wheel. The older 700 transmissions used gears.

1987 Volkswagen Golf - speedometer problem

Well I would verify the trany speed gear is "ate up" first, theres only one 10mm bolt that holds it in place, sure the area around the speedo cable is very CLEAN before removing it any dirt in there would make things bad to say the least. If you pull the cable out the gear is attached to the cable if it looks good then put it back together and remove your cluster (speedo and other gauges inside) I suggest you pick up a repair manual at a big auto store on MK1-MK2 vdubs (82-92) to explain how to remove speedo cable from back of cluster its kinda of tricky getting your fingers back there and pressing it together to get it to release. Once out drive the car and see if that cable is turning from the inside if it is then its your speedo gauge that is faulty. Grab a cluster from a scrap yard, if that cable is NOT turning then the gearing inside the trany is messed up which would mean taking the trany apart to repair it. If that was the case you would be cheaper to replace the whole trany with a used one. Good luck
