Question about 1998 Ford Taurus
The service engine light soon flashed and then shut off. I just got an oil change last month and even had the transmission serviced
Check engine lights have been used for over 30 years and yet most people do not know what they are used for.
The check engine light tells the driver a problem exists with the performance or emissions of the engine. Not the actual engine itself.
Anytime something happens that could affect emissions or performance, the light comes on and a trouble code is set in the computer memory. The driver then has to have the computer scanned for those codes to know what component to have checked.

if the light is flashing it most like hasly some sort of misfire or converter failure, p0171 and p0174 is lean bank 1 and 2, replace you upper and lower plenum gaskets, while they have they off have they replace your ignition coil, plugs and wires, windstars are known for 2 things, lean codes,(plenum gaskets) misfire(bad ignition coil)

the service engine light is prob due to the oxygen sensor being damaged, not replace or you having the catalytic converter taken off---just messing with you. start at auto zone and have then do a free code read then go from there. you should troubleshoot the low fluid level switch for your brake fluid. unplug it and see if the light goes off and if it doesn't jump the two terminals on the harness. oh the car will have to be running. SOURCE: Service Engine Soon Light
Engine light could mean many thing. There's about a 100 things that can make the light go on.
Best thing to do is go to an autoparts store and have them scan for the trouble code from the on board computer. Many autoparts store will do this for free. They should tell you what the trouble code means and you can start from there.

SOURCE: Service Engine Soon light reset.
The Service Engine Soon light comes only when the engine computer control unit (called the PCM) senses a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system, it is not related to the oil change, there are about 200 possible faults that turn the light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen and Autozone parts stores do this testing for free.

Testimonial: "Thanks! I guess the person that told me it was an oil change light was not quite up to speed. I'm off to AutoZone."
