SOURCE: 1999 ford taurus starter will not engage

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

To my knowledge, you assumption is correct on most designs. That wire should go to the ignition switch and will be hot when key is in START. However, same wire often would be connected first to a relay that is interlocked with some conditions/status other then key to START. They would be:

  • automatic transmission should be in neutral/park with light indicated;
  • alarm/security/immobilizer is inactive/OFF.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

SOURCE: where is the starter relay on a 94 Honda Accord

Yes, it sounds like your solenoid is bad and staying engaged against the flywheel, you could do an amperage draw and a voltage drop test to find out for sure, but you will need an DVOM and a amp clamp. Or you could take it into an auto parts store and they will test it for free. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1989 jeep wrangler. New engine and transmission.

What the dealer told you sounds strange but the only thing I can think of that might do that is if the flex plate (flywheel) was put in backwards, if it has an off-set (like a wheel and tire assembly) it may be too close to the starter gear. BUT that still does not tell me why it wasn't doing it all the time. It is weird problems like yours that make me wish I could go there and actually see it.I hope after the shop finishes it works out well!!!

Define won't turn over ? There are two different situations you could be trying to discribe . When you turn the key to the start position does the starter engage an spin the engine , but does not start an run ? Or when you turn the key to the start position it won't engage the starter an spin the engine . We have a engine cranks no start or a no crank no start . And what is this commutateur ????? commutator for what ? And it also makes a difference on what make , model and year vehicle it is .
and cyl ????? what cylinder ? Ignition ,key lock ????

My 2000 S10 will not crank,it has new battery & alternator, when the ignition is turned on I get all dash lights but won't turn over. The light around the odometer dims when I engage the key.

You need to test the start wire at the starter when the key is turned to crank position to make sure it has power during cranking. Sometimes tapping on the starter motor with a hammer while cranking will engage a bad starter motor

2005 GMC Envoy XL. Will not engage starter. Like something electrical. Turn key and nothing. Worked fine until now.

Could be the neutral safety switch if it won't crank in neutral or park, could also be the starter has failed.

My car wont turn over how do I home test 2001malibu starter

You just bypass the ignition wires. Even with the starter in the car you can place the positive jumper lead on the large nut and negative to any metal part of the car and you should engage starter. If your battery is good, turn key until light comes on dash in the run position and use a screwdriver to touch the little but on the solenoid (I believe the two are connected in that year) to the large nut on the starter to engage it. Hint, both will have wires already attached. Or you can take the starter out and engage it on the bench by grounding starter with neg lead on jumper cables and touching positive to the nut

Starter wont engage

Could be the switch, the solenoid, or the starter. You would need to check for power at the starter post each time the key switch is in the start position. You can hook up a test light or a meter to watch it.

2004 ion won't start. Lights work. When I turn key don't get series of clicks, get one snap.

That symptom usually means the solenoid on the starter is bad and no longer is completing the circuit to engage the starter. A new starter will likely solve that issue. A series of rapid clicks would indicate a week battery. You can try repeatedly turning the key to the start position rapidly, sometimes the starter wil start working. You can also try tapping the starter while somebody holds the key in the start position, if the starter engages place it.

As soon as I turn the key to the on position, the engine turns over

The problem is either in the mechanism that pushes the rod that activates the ignition switch from the key lock cylinder, or the ignition switch is defective.
