How to stop the squeaking in the rear of my jeep?

I have a constant squeaking in the rear of my jeep but whenever I apply the brakes even slightly it stops. My pads are 80% rotors seem smooth no grooves. I also checked u-joints they seem secure no slop, but my parking brake has no tension on it maybe this could be my problem??

The noise could be connected to the parking brake, or it could be a loose brake pad. When you engage the brakes the pads strike the rotors and then can not move around.

i have a 2002 jeep grand cherokee i had the same problem when i would apply my brakes when the headlights were on my brake lights would go out, i found that my bulbsocket was not making good contact with the socket housing, if you notice when you take off a bulb, look at the light fixture where you unscrewed your breaklight bulb you will notice 3 medal contacts-they should be silver in the socket housing and like a copper on the socket bulb, in the socket housing their should be 2 silver contacts together and 1 by itself the one that looks by itself is making bad contact with the copper one thats by itself on the bulb, what you can do for a quick fix is; get a small piece of low cage wire or a thin piece of metal like copper stick that in to the bottom or top of that metal contact--i did it through the bottom leave the wire or piece of medal sticking out enough for where it can get contact with the bulb (just a little wire is enough to make contact, now screw the bulb on and test it---it will work----i did it to mine, if you need more assistance let me know lmadrid82@yahoo.com

put the back of car on jack stands and secure the front tires so it does not roll and then remove the bolts off the back of the caliper there is normally two one at top and one at bottom and spray it with some kind of oil for rust and make sure you have the right size socket before you try to loosen them and once caliper is off and the old pads removed take one of the old pads and squeeze the piston on the caliper back in by using a "C" clamp and also remove some of the brake fluid from the master cylinder before you do this put the new ones back on and check the brake fluid and make sure it is full and then pump the brakes to make sure you have a good pedal also put some "No Squeak" brake stop on the back of the pads so they don't squeak they will have that where you buy the pads from

Replace rear rotors on 04 liberty.
Remove tire & wheel
Remove brake caliper, tie up out of way.
Back off e-brake shoe adjustment.
Remove factory spring clip from lugs (2places)
This is the crude part....
After attempting to pull off disc/drum with puller....I got pretty sick of it. Understand this is in the Northeast with lots of salt on the roads in winter. Needless to say there is a ridge of rust around the inside edge of the e-brake surface. Any more pressure and I was afraid of damage to the e-brake shoe asembly. I then took a small grinder with a cut off wheel and cut the disc thru (used space where caliper usually sits). Also cut nearly through the face between 2 lugs. You can't quite get thru the back corner at the disc. Since the material is cast iron it will crack when you drive a wedge in the slot cut in the disc. This opens the housing around the shoes and it slides off easily. The cutting operation took less than10 mins, alot less than the puller with hammer assist!
I know this is a bit "unorthodox" to say the least, however the object is to remove the old junk disc safely and as quickly as possible, without harming the e-brake parts inside.
Install new parts in reverse order, new pads go in easy after squeezing the caliper piston back with a c clamp as is the normal procedure.

Per Chilton Auto repair manual:

Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the rear wheel.
  3. Siphon a small amount of brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
  4. Insert a small prybar through the caliper opening and pry the caliper cover (using the outboard brake pad) to bottom the piston in the caliper bore.
  5. Remove the caliper slide bolts.
  6. Remove the caliper from the anchor.

    WARNING Support the brake caliper with mechanics wire. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
  7. Remove the brake pads from the caliper.
To install:
  1. Install the brake pads onto the caliper.
  2. Lubricate the slide pin bolts with grease provided with the brake pads, or suitable silicon grease equivalent.
  3. Install the caliper on the anchor and tighten the slide pin bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4. Install the rear wheel.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Pump the brake pedal several times until a firm pedal is obtained in order to properly seat the pads.
  7. Refill the brake fluid reservoir to the proper level.

Squeaking and grinding noise when I apply the brakes


Try replacing or resurfacing your rotors and brake hardware. Using brake pads similar to the oem will also help stop any problems.

My brakes don't calibrate on their own, therefore they make a squeaking sound when I break how do I fix it


Check rear brakes for:
1. Brake shoe (Cracked or distorted)
2. Installation bolt (Loose)
3. Rear brake drum (Scored)
4. Brake shoe (Dirty).
5. Brake shoe (Glazed)
6. Tension or return spring (Faulty)
7. Anti-squeal shim (Damaged)
8. Shoe hold down spring (Damaged).
6. Apply a thin layer of multipurpose grease on the area between the back plate and the brake shoes by slightly pulling off the shoes with the help of a screw driver.

1 problem at a time

1st-- squeaks-- when the breaks where replaced where the anti-radile clips put back in, if so dose squeak rear or front

if rear check spring kits

2nd-- jerks-- this could be drive train question dose ur engine seem to rev at all wen this is happening


try this

goto an area where this is safe

driving at normal speeds put the shifter in neutral (this will NOT hurt it if you follow wat i say)
now apply the brakes dose it **** if so problem is in breaks is not get ur trans looked at

Sharp squeaking from rt rear wheel. Might be a bearing but it stops if i apply light brake pressure


your rear brakes need servicing!!Those sqeaking noises are from metal pins within the brake pads. They touch the rotor surface when the pads are worn. Usually when brakes are applied they tend to silence the squeal. Inspect the rear brakes for pad thickness. Hopefully this helpd!!

Squeaking mouse noise from the passenger front tire area.


If I had to make a guess, I'll bet the noise is the wear indicators on your front brake pads just beginning to touch the rotors. If you remove the wheel, you should see a small metal tab on the rear of the pad. If it is very close to the rotor, replace the front pads. I've seen lots of people just bend the tab back to stop the noise, but if you do that it's almost guaranteed that you will forget 'till the rotors are all scored up. So, do it now!!

Try applying brakes slightly when squeak occurs, and see if noise goes away or changes.

When applying brakes, driver's side of car shudders


This sounds like you have a warped rotor that either needs to be turned or the rotor needs to be replaced. This has nothing to do with the rear brake system at all.
