Engine not revving past 2500rpm in park or neutral?

Not sure if this is normal or if this is linked to the constant black smoke we are getting when the accelerator is used whilst driving normally

Could be problem with TPS sensor or IAC sensor.

Yes there is a governor which limits the rpm to 2500 rpm. It ha been limited because beyond this rev, the engine gets overheated and if kept running it that condition would slowly but surely damage the engine badly. Once you have reached the limit naturally your cruise control will stop working since its supposed to maintain that speed, which is not allowed by the governor. This governor can be removed but then you will have to risk damaging your engine fatally........................sodeep

The Effects of Over Revving a motor can be Catastrophic. I do not understand why the government would require someone to do such a test. Normal Emissions Testing is done at High (2100 - 2500) and the Idle (500-900).

Reason for Increased Smoke.... As you increase the internal pressure of the vehicle, you are creating a VACUUM and this is suckking the Oil past the rings, and anywhere else that it is causing the Vacuum.

Efffects of Over Revving van be Premature Failure of the engine (Could cost you $5-$8,000 to replace)... I would ask WHY so high... A Diesel would MAX OUT their RPM @ 4,000.

These people who are doing the test, ask them to show you where it says in WRITING 4,000... That is much higher than in the 4 states I have been certified to be an I/M Inspector

If you are doing this with no load on the engine in park or neutral then the engine computers automatic rev limiter is kicking in to prevent free wheel/no load damage to the engine components

Hello there,

This is a normal operation, all your doing is hitting the rev limiter. It's there to protect the engine from over revving. The Powertrain Control Module or PCM cuts fuel to the engine intermittently to keep the engine from revving past a predetermined RPM when in "neutral", and in "park" if it's an automatic. Just in case something like a foreign object or a small child or animal were to inadvertently depress the accelerator pedal and rev the engine too high and damage the engine in result. diesels are not known to be high revving engines to begin with, anyways, it sounds like your turbo is malfunctioning, get it inspected or repaired

Most newer model cars have a computer program that will not allow a car to be revved up past a set rpm while in park or neutral to protect the engine from damage. If it runs fine during normal driving operations then it is best to leave it alone.

Some of these engines have a place to drain water out of the fuel system.. Some fords actually have a stick under the hood that you push or pull That opens a valve on a water collection bowl. It's not labeled usually. It might state where it is in the owners manual under fuel water drainage or something similar.. if that bowl is full it will cause hesitation... If it gets over full it will cause runability problems. Another possibility since you said it's black smoke is one of your injectors is sticking at low rpms and squirting raw fuel into the cylinder till the rpms get up enough to burn that fuel off completely then then the injector works a little better.... Do you notice any missing... Feel something under the hood like the air cleaner housing and make sure the vibration is constant and doesn't have a small sudden shake and the n smoothe... And then a small sudden shake again.
If it does have this shake you can trouble shoot which injectors by with the engine running loosening an injector line and seeing if the engine runs worse or not.. If it runs worse tighten it up and move to the next line till you unscrew one and feel and hear no difference... When you find that one that's the injector with the problem.

sometimes when the motors under enought pressure it will black smoke..so mabe the transmission is hanging up or something in first gear,,,i can rev my truck up all day and it wont black smoke when these a sever load o it and i hammer down it putts a bind on the motor and fuel is steadly being pump into the motor causing unburn fuel witch is black smoke..so maybe you want to go check the transmission or the fuel PUMP not the filters

you have a boostleak, i build gsx's my roommate owns 4g63 power, give me your email er cell and i will send you a boost leak detector you hook up to the turbo inlet and shoot pressurized air into it and if you have a boostleak it will leak out of the engine somewhere that is your leak you replace the seal or hose and blauw the car is fixed, hook me up with blue feedback since im going this far out of my way. the reason you cant get past 2500rpm is because unmeetered air is being let in post maf sensor and the ecu is trying to richen up the engine which is causing the black smoke and probably a strong smell of fuel. my current dsm is the 9th one ive owned =) they break alot lol easy fix though.
