U codes are a communication problem between computers. They will usually turn on a light in the dash for the area to look at. IE.. ABS,Check engine,Security... Some wont turn a light on, BCM..U codes can come from disconnecting the battery or the battery gets to low on voltage. (like a bad alternator) Last but not least would be a short or broken wire in the communications line. Depending on the year, communication lines were from computer to computer. Newer models splice the commuication lines into one place that feed all the computers.

This may help you after replacing an alternator.

If All connections, cables, and computer are in good shape. The problem is that re-manufactured alternators installed, simply would not communicate with Ford's "power train control module". They absolutely charge the battery (14.5 volts and as much as 60 amps of current, just after cranking), the warning light just didn't know it. Further, most of the alternators are correct for the year model and engine, according to parts description. Go to the junk yard and buy a factory alternator out of a wrecked Explorer and this will sort the warning light immediately.

Another problem is the parts stores can only test the output of an alternator, they can not check the indicator circuit. all new alternators will checked OK but it might not be correct for your power train module.

Lesson learned: when it comes to electric components, buy factory.

2003 windstar alternator over charge I try 5 or 6 alternator diferent companie always the same problem go up to 18.80 v help me please

it should notgo over 14 1/2 volts.

Get free DTC codes scan from Autozone. I think you will get DTC code 1246 - System Voltage Malfuction.

The I (indicator) (BAT light) wire activates alternator field circuit.

The heavy B wire circuit sends current to the battery for charing and to run the car.

The S circuit helps control the amount of charge. I suspect yours is not controlling. This car has the PCM (engine computer) help control the output and turn the BAT light on when under or over charging.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Charging System This vehicle is equipped with a powertrain control module (PCM)-controlled "smart charge" charging system. The PCM-controlled charging system is a system whereby the PCM determines the optimal voltage setpoint for the charging system and communicates this information to the voltage regulator. The PCM-controlled charging system is unique in that it has two uni-directional communication lines between the PCM and the generator/regulator. Both of these communication lines are pulse-width modulated. The GEN COM line communicates the desired setpoint from the PCM to the voltage regulator and the GEN MON line communicates the alternator load condition to the PCM. The third pin on the voltage regulator, the A circuit pin, is a dedicated battery voltage sense line.
  • Charging system malfunction (high or low system voltage)
  • possible causes:
    • A circuit 35 (OG/LB).
    • A circuit fuse link.
    • B+ circuit 36 (YE/WH).
    • B+ circuit fuse links.
    • Generator.
    • PCM
    • GEN-COM circuit 586 (RD/PK).
    • GEN-MON circuit 585 (VT).
    Generator The generator (10300) on this vehicle is monitored and controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM monitors the voltage regulator and sends a duty cycle command back to the voltage regulator to regulate the amount of field current supplied to the generator. The generator has an internal voltage regulator. The generator and voltage regulator are installed as an assembly.

    Battery new alternator tests 14.40 volts but battery light stays on

    You haven't given you vehicle's model number, but its possible that the battery light
    may be on due to a fault detected in the voltage regulator - but in modern cars, the voltage
    regulator is integral to the alternator (which you stated is new), and 14.40 volts is excellent
    alternator output.
    Another possibility is that the computer in your newer Toyota has not had its code reset
    from when it detected low voltage output from the old alternator. Once the computer sets this
    code, the battery light is lit, and remains lit until the error code is manually cleared by the
    mechanic holding an OBD-II coder reader communicating with your car's computer.

    The battery light is on, check charging system communication is displayed. Have changed battery with no change.

    it may be the alternator thats not charging or its a over charge. at battery with engine off should read at least 12.8 to 13 volts, when engine is running, at battery voltage should be at least 14 to 14.2. if running and not producing about 14 volts. the alternator is bad, or the belt is slipping. check alternator voltage. have a good day !!

    Check i the truck comes with separte a/c units, if the front is warm check for an open heater valve, if ok, check for proper gas pressure.

    Unable to communicat to the OBD2 for a 1999 Nissan Altima

    Up to 99 or 2000 model maxima's arent OBD II. There is a OBD I connector located behind the fuse box cover inside the car. It is a grey connector.
