Question about 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

1 Answer

I have been told cyclinders 4,5,6 is losing 15% combustion, does anyone know what this could be?

I went to autozone and got codes P0316 P0304 and p0305 and cod p0171 i have replace plugs ,wires, and coilpack. I took it to Ford who put it on diagnostics and advised it was losing 15% combustion in cyclinders 4-5-6 and that the head will need to come off to determine more. they also advised that I could drive it for 6 months and it would be fine and would not leave me stranded. Does anyone know what could be the problem? and will it be okay to keep driving it. It runs a little rough in drive and reverse but seems to be okay driving it and while in park and neutral.

Code 316 is for a random miss at startup. Code 304 is for a miss or power loss on cylinder 4 and 305 is the same thing for cylinder 5. Code 171 is saying the fuel mixture for bank one is too lean.
These issues could be from a weak fuel pump or other fuel related problem.
While compression levels between cylinders could also cause the 300 codes, that would not cause the 171 code. And there should have been a code 306 if all three cylinders having lower compression was the sole issue.
I would check the fuel pressure and look for vac leaks, along with checking the spark plugs and ignition system.

SOURCE: I have a 2002mercury sable,

P0316 crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, or a wiring issue. Since this code indicates a start up misfire, pay attention to items which may expand or contract when cold (if the code sets when the engine is cold), or hot (if the code sets on a hot restart).

If you have other misfire codes that pertain to individual cylinders, you should attend to them first P1151 has a huge list of things that it can be, But included in that list is the camshaft position sensor , po1131 is the same thing, all building up to your car is running lean , so I'd do the sensor (cam) and check timing,,

SOURCE: my car is cutting off

Hi

P0305 is misfire in cylinder #5.
P0306 is misfire in cylinder#6.
P0316 is misfire on start up.
Have the plugs on those 2 cylinders, and the 2 fuel injectors checked, also check for spark from the coil on those 2 plug wires.

Please get back to us if you have further query or else please accept the solution.

SOURCE: 1998 Mercury Sable Cylinder 5 Misfire

I would try a spark plug first (cheapest) about $5 for a platinum plug. I would see if the spark plug is firing before putting it in. Pull the spark plug wire off of existing plug put it on the new plug and ground the plug. Crank over or start the engine, is it firing? If not spark plug wire would be the next cheapest. You may be able to get just one wire, but I would replace the whole set. If it still is not firing the coil pack is probably bad about $60-70. If it is firing in the above steps it could be the injector is not working. You could drive the car as is, but it would drive me nuts, I can't stand something that doesn't run right. You will naturally be low on power and probably not doing your gas mileage any good either.

The clue to all your problems is the engine light being on. It is correctly called an 'engine malfunction light'. When you attach an OBD11 scanner to the vehicle, it will give you a P-Code and tell you exactly what is wrong. Garages will usually read the code for free in the hope of getting the work. It literally takes less than 2 minutes.

Spark plugs last nearly the life of the vehicle these days.

A very common problem is a bad COP or coil. They can be expensive ($75? at part store), so you could try switching the coil with another cylinder and see if the code changes location with the coil.
They are easy to replace. Unplug the connector. Remove the one screw (8mm?). Pull straight out.
