Question about 1989 Volvo 740

No spark out of dizzy

Hey there I started the car a week ago, started no prob, then died.I've replaced coil dizzy and cap new rotor, new plugs replaced leads but still no spark from dizzy to block. When trying to start, it turns over, looses power and wont fire

ok you said it has fire from the coil but no spark? pull a plug if it wet put in all new and use one to ck fire at plug wire end

SOURCE: I have a 88 volvo 740 GLE and it wont fire.

The problem wont be your timing belt. you need to take out a spark plug plug it into your HT lead and check for a strong spark or even if there is a spark. check your contact breakers on the distributor as well

Try replacing your fuel pump relay,this controls this.The fuelpump relay is two relays in one unit.

No spark at plugs


Do you mean you get spark from coil high tension wire to dizzy cap? If so, the only thing left is the cap and rotor and wires and the engine must have a good ground.

What could cause a1991 suzuki samurai to have no fire from a new coil?


no spark from coil directly?
is the cam turning, is the dizzy rotor spinning. ????

check all fuses first. Ig-coil, FI and dome.
then using diagnostic jumper wire or fuse, (as approp)
crank engine look for code 41 o 42.!!!

USA cars , answers only
our cars are all EFI that year.
no engine swaps to Suzuki G16A/B sidekick or tracker engines.!
1: engine cranks
2: no spark
3: The ECu makes spark
the CMP sensor in the DIzzy , (never fails if rotor turns, does rotor turn, if not cam belt igored and now snapped.)
the cam turns. the CMP fires. the ECU takes this CMP signal
and fires the ignitor next to coil and the coil charges, and release and BAM spark.

that is it.
the ECU will tell you when the CMP dies or the Ignitor fails
why not ask it.
1: key on
2: diagnostic jumper in place (flashes 12s for ok)
3: crank engine,for 5sec, not 1 ,not 2.
3: release key not off.
4: see code 41, or 42, BINGO !@!!!!

Spark plug wire was pulled while running and the ark traveled back two and a half inched to the rotor cap then the car died. What now?


Yeah like the guy above said check your dizzys coil. I had the EXACT problem. Also pick up a circuit tester and hook it to the dizzys ignition and have a friend turn the engine over. If the light blinks then it's the coil for sure

If you replaced the injector after the plugsthey may be fuel fouled.Pull the plugs and clean them.(you can sandblast them,or use a method I used to use-shoot a little starting fluid on them and use a lighter to burn off the contamination of too much fuel).I can't believe GM kept using this stupid design so long-I remember nearly new Vortec V6s with this same problem in the '90s.

Not getting any spark out of my plug wires already replaced coil, main relay,and ignition module. could it bemy rotar or distrbut


The Honda system uses a coil that mounts inside the dist, right ?
If you can check voltage output at the coil tower with the cap off you can find out if the coil is firing. If it is, then yes the rotor could be the problem. The voltage has to go thru the cap to the center of the rotor then to each plug terminal. The spark can jump thru the rotor and ground thru the dist shaft.

Installed new engine now wont fire from distributor to spark plugs.


If you've got spark from the coil but not at the spark plugs, it can only be 1 of 3 things.
  • Bad spark plugs or plugs not gapped properly.
  • Bad spark plug wires.
  • Bad distributor cap and rotor. This is pretty easy to check. Open up the cap and look at the points on the underside of the cap and also the point on the rotor. If they look corroded or worn, then you should replace them.

Need firing order diagram.. wont start


remove the dizzy cap, crank motor over to find out the rotation of the rotor. Remove the no.1 spark plug and bring no.1 piston up to top dead centre on compression stroke, mark side of dizzy body where the end of the rotor points to, replace dizzy cap and see which lead it lines up with.
that will be your no.1 lead, find the firing order and put the leads back on the dizzy cap in the direction of the rotors rotation, run those leads to the corresponding plugs and it should start.

Replced the cap & dist coil pac has fire no spark to spark plug


install the new rotor, if that isn't it check the crankshaft position sensor.
