Check PCV valve,,or vacume hoses on the throttle-body

check fuel pressure/volume, injectors, engine temp sensor for computer to know what the engine temp is, map sensor, timing, throttle position sensor. what emission did it fail might help.

High Idle when warmed up. 95 Grand cherokee 4liter. i can let off the gas and the vehicle will accelerate up to 30mph stays at about 1500rpms idling

It sounds like your IACV, ( Idle Air Control Valve), is bad. I would go to the parts store, if you can drive the vehicle and have them hook a scanner up to your vehicle, ( its free) and pull the codes for you. This will give you a better idea of what is happening with your engine. Hope this helps. Let me know.

all code readers will retrieve information stored while in the on position --doesnt need to be running ---when you rehook up scanner either resubmit or edit request with codes

Really sounds like a vacuum leak. Lean code could still be accurate. Screaming idle usually means air is getting into engine. Ruptured EGR diaphragm would vent air. Brake booster could vent air. A lot of air will show lean mix.

You may have to use different methods to test vacuum. Some use vacuum gauge to test egr and lines which dead end into solenoids. Other tests use water spray or propane gas to draw in and change rpm. You are at a disadvantage if engine does not run.

Crankshaft sensor helps set fuel volume for given rpm. Might not be counting all the rpm's, but would not account for fast idle.

Your engine does indeed have an Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve.

It is a sensor bolted to your throttle body - look for an electrical connector.

A malfunctioning IAC can cause improper idle of your engine.

I have a 95 f150 and it has a tendency to idle at 1100 rpms in park. i clean the idle position sensor and that didnt help. also it seems like it has no power when i drive it and i'm not getting very good...


symtoms of a bad coolant sensor. poor idle, stalling, rich mixture, retarded timing, low idle speed, cold hesitation or stumble, poor fuel milage. ( will also ****** timing ). in some cases you can unplug sensor and the pcm will compensate by running a default air/fuel ratio and in some cases allowing car to run without the sensor.Id just replace it !! if light is on, get vehicle scanned to find problem code. most all auto parts stores will scan for free, auto-zone etc. have a good day !!

1998 plymoth voyager 2.4 l engine just replaced water pump and timing belt and throttle positioning sensor but still will not idle


I suggest check O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold ; are you scanned the PCM with some OBD reader to know if some trouble code is stored there?

I don't know if the 2.4L has it, but my 3.0L has an Idle Air Control motor that is known for going out - it controls engine idle. Chekc it and keep us updated.

Turned check engine light off by disconnecting battery.Went to start vehicle it started however,will not idle,shuts off.96 tbird v6


Need to check the engine. It is the 02 sensor sensing too rich or too lean fuel mixture. Or one of them is defective.

I know I had this same problem with my car three times actually and I had to keep getting the oxygen sensors changed. since there is more than one.

Checking the fault codes


Yes.  Next to the ash tray there is a black slide off plate that reveals the OBD I plug.  {1996 and newer can be read with an OBD II reader (read for free at Advance auto or Auto Zone)}  Once you reveal this plug on the 1995, you can plug in a single jumper wire (or even a paper clip) in the #4 and #15 pin hole.  There are two rows of pin holes, count from the upper right to the #4, then on to #15 (which will be the second to last pin hole).  Turn the ignition switch on (motor not running), insert the jumper wire for about 3 to 5 seconds, then remove the wire.  The ENGINE LIGHT will flash a hold, then the code, which will go something like this, flash, flash, PAUSE, flash, flash, PAUSE, flash, PAUSE, flash, flash, flash, flash.  Then it will repeat the codes if you just sit there and observe it.  The code in my example would be a 2214 code.
