Took it to the garage and, natually, they didn't hear it. It sounds like the screeching is coming from the belt. Only has 34,500 miles on it. The Toyota repair man said he didn't think it was the belt but that is the first thing they would replace. It sure does sound like it is the belt.
Thank you very much. I didn't ask at the garage how much it would cost to replace the belt. Any ball park idea of the cost?Thank you very much. I didn't ask at the garage how much it would cost to replace the belt. Any ball park idea of the cost?

A couple of things come to mind: if it wasn't screeching before replacing the belt, you may not have routed the belt properly - especially around the belt tensioner pulley; or the bearing on that pulley may need lubrication or replacement; or the A/C compressor bearing may have failed causing excessive resistance on the new belt resulting in screeching. Also, if the belt was not routed properly, the screeching may be coming from another belt-driven (power steering pump, water pump, etc.) but it doesn't sow up until you engage the A/C with its additional drag.
Your AC pump is starting to faiL. It's starting to bind and putting heavy back pressure on the belt causing it slip and screech. After the car cools off inside, the load on the AC compressor is lower and the sound will die down. Also when the belt gets hot it gets a little more flexible and grippy which also lowers sound.
Take it to an auto AC repair place and have it checked.
The belt is slipping or the compressor and/or clutch is bad. If the compressor won't turn freely with the engine off, it may be locked up which will make the belt screech.
hi any kind of screeching noise normally means uve got a metal on metal contact so i wd say u probally need ur pads changing also the rust that forms is totally normal when not used for a while goodluck
In my 37 years of working on cars, I never, ever heard of a belt tensioner leaking, All there is inside is a heavy duty spring, and after awhile they become weak, causing the belt to squeel. There is no adjustment on them, just replacement.
My guess without hearing it, is that you have a loose or worn belt causing the screeching, or squeeling noise your hearing, but as far as sluggish goes, that may be another thing all together. I'd suggest having your belts looked at and adjusted or replaced as necessary. Once it's confirmed or not that your noise was from that or maybe even a tensioner, then we can go from there. In the meantime, chek your oil level just as a precaution, if you haven't lately, and top it up as needed. They are usually a pretty reliable car, so I wouldn't hit the panic button on it being an engine problem yet.
Sounds like fan belt wasnt done up tightly and suprised garage wouldnt find time to fix or inspect thier own repair.Unsure about liability. From the point of view that thier repair caused a problem that didnt previously exist i would have to say yesbut you need to prove the car wasnt over heating before it went there. That screech may have been slipping, certainly sounds like it.On the other hand, you chose to drive to the point of a serious overheat and failed to see the temp rising on your dash gauge.Dont get me wrong im not saying its your fault but if you pursue the liability thing it will be asked why you drove the car knowing there was a problem.
Thank you very much. I didn't ask at the garage how much it would cost to replace the belt. Any ball park idea of the cost?
