How to replace heater core on 1998 Lincoln Towncar - need pictures, etc.

If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing
  • The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
  • Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.
f74-01.gif The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core. Heater Core
  • Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
  • Remove the heater coolant hoses.
  • Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
  • Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
  • Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
  • To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

How do you bypass the heater core on a 1998 Ford Bronco 2?

Disconnect both hoses from the core and one of them also from the engine. Hook the other one back to where you took one off, making a loop. The picture below is not a bronco, but gives you the idea.
By the way, your core is easy to replace. It almost pops right out from under the dash. I ahve included picture below.

Remove and replace heater core procedures:

  1. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core tubes and plug hoses.
  2. In the passenger compartment, remove the five screws attaching the heater core access cover to the plenum assembly and remove the access cover.
  3. Pull the heater core rearward and down, removing it from the plenum assembly.

To install:

  1. Position the heater core and seal in the plenum assembly.
  2. Install the heater core access cover to the plenum assembly and secure with five screws.
  3. Install the heater hoses to the heater core tubes at the dash panel in the engine compartment. Do not over-tighten hose clamps.
  4. Check the coolant level and add coolant as required. Connect the negative battery cable.
  5. Start the engine and check the system for coolant leaks.

Heater core

You have to pull the dash and all the lower fascia, then remove the box that houses the Heater Core Take the clamps off the heater hoses from the engine compartment side of the firewall and disconnect the heater hoses. Disconnect the bracket that holds the heater core in place from the inside of the passenger compartment (if present.) Carefully remove the heater core and discard it. Install a new heater core reversing the above steps.

Leaking heater core coolent smell through the a/c

The same thing happened to my '99. I found an 'off' brand heater core locally then seached the internet to find direction on how to install. I don't remember the link, but someone had posted pictures of the step by step. Although I must say the sticking point for me was removing the screw holding the heater core to the pipes coming from the front of the car then removing the core holder.
It took me a couple of hours, not really knowing what I was doing, but went real smooth. It's fixed for around $140! And NO MORE ANTIFREEZE SMELL!!
