1997 Olds LSS: 3800 engine, 198 K miles. engine running rough, loss of power; black smoke was coming out from rear of the engine compartment.

1997 Olds LSS: 3800 engine, 198 K miles. Driving to work, engine started running rougn and experienced a loss of power; check engine light came on, drove ~2 miles to work. When I parked it, black smoke was coming out from the rear of the engine compartment. Checked the oil level and coolant level, all was normal. Once it cooled off, again checked the levels and removed the radiator cap, again all normal. What could be the problem?

SOURCE: engine running to cool

Replace the thermostat. If thermo is stuck open, coolant only heats up when there is no flow over radiator(idle) and then cools down when driving. Also, check coolant level, same response as stuck thermo.

SOURCE: check engine light has come on

You need a code scanner hooked up to it to find out why the light is on.
If there is an advanced auto or an autozone near you, go there and tell them the engine light is on, and you need a code retrieved. They don't charge for this, where other places do. Tales about a minute.

SOURCE: after oil change, oil level

You need to scan it , to find what the code is.
Usually check engine light doesn't have to do anything with oil.

1995 Oldsmobile 88 LSS 3.8 smokes at idle

Valve stem seals. Oil is thicker when cold (hence no smoke when cold) Vlave stem symptoms are when engine at idle (high vacume) oil is pulled through the guide seals, when you take off from lights get bit of smoke until oil is burnt. Ring symtoms is it would be blowing smoke all the time especially at higher rpm for extended time ie: driveing. Have you thought of trying a thicker oil? what oil grade do you currently run?

Heater Core

My mechanic tells me it is almost impossible to get to it without
taking out the dash. This will give you the clearance you need
to replace it. You might try it from under the dash if you have a
good back but i don.t think there's enough clearance to get it out.
I bought a salvage 1997 lss Olds and the airbag popped the dash
so we had to replace it. Not an easy task unless you've done it
before.
