You have a loose wire connection from the fan switch to the motor someplace. Banging on the dash makes temporary connection of the loose connection problem until the next time you try it. It is possible too that your fan switch is corroded.
This car has an electric fuel pump. I would say that the connection to the fuel pump is faulty. and when you bang on the tank it scoots it into place enough for a connection. Think of an old tv. old connections you bang on the side works like a charm..
