My 2003 Suburban will not start. When I turn the key it turns over but it doesn't catch. Also when I turn the ignition the only light that comes on is the check engine light no other gage works

Could be a ignition switch problem , but without testing that would just be a guess > Check for spark , pull a plug wire an stick a screw driver in the spark plug boot , hold it near engine ground . Have someone else crank the engine , does it have spark ? Hook up a fuel pressure gauge an test fuel pressure . You need to find out what's missing ? As far as the instrument cluster malfunction , GM had problems with instrument clusters from 2003 to 2006 , could just be that . I assume you don't have a professional type scan tool that will communicate with the modules on the vehicle .

No Start Diagnostic Basics EricTheCarGuy

A none communicating module on the vehicle can cause a no start condition , bring's down the class 2 serial communication network . If you don't know what that is suggest you google or check out videos on youtube . Also check the five volt ref. volt from the PCM/ECM - engine computer to the TPS - throttle position sensor because it's the easiest to get at .

When I start my 2004 Mercury Mountaineer the check engine light flashes the battery light comes on and won't turn off the oil gauge seems to be rising in the battery gauge seems to be going lower.

Probably, factory installed alternator has failed and vehivle is only using battery power.Suggestion:Start engine and check available voltage at battery with DVOM.SHOULD be 13.9 volts minimum and about 14.5 max.if not in range listed.please have alternator checked for failure.
