Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

Foul smell of sulfur from tailpipe

Wife drives down our hill to mail box, comes back up and shuts car off. Less than 5 minutes of running the engine. The garage stinks when this happens. Open the door and take the car for a ride of a longer duration and no problem? Why?

The short run period is not allowing the engine to come to operating temperature nor allowing the cat converter to light up and do it's job. This behaviour will reduce the life of you vehicle by 75% over the expected life span and will cost big dollars very shortly. It would be more beneficial both financially and health wise to stroll to the letter box.

SOURCE: 2006 Toyota 4Runner Sulfur smell

I noticed going from a Higher Grade gasoline as well as making sure I change my motor oil on a regular basis (3,000-5,000 mi)to solve this problem. When the car isn't driven at a high RPM for a while, and you go to a quick acceleration it causes this smell.

I have a 12 tundra TRD..I just pulled in and I could smell that sulfur smell coming from my fan and the fan keeps running...after I shut the engine off..where do I start

The fan will continue to run until the coolant sensor reaches a predetermined point. The sulfur smell should be from the catalytic converter.

What would be causing what sulfur smelling exhaust smoke?

The Smell is-- Sulfur Dioxide-- from an over heated
Exhaust Converter

Yes-- it will be ruined soon

White Smoke all the time, could be a head gasket

It could also be-- lots of fuel-- that is overheating the converter

Have to look at fuel trim on scan tool data

Odd smell from engine

If you have been (revving the car/racing/accident/excessive speeding) you will smell something similar to burning oil from the engine, also if it has been more than 10,000kms (6000 mile) since last oil change you should get it serviced.

Engine chugging, like there is no gas but there is and a sulphar smell

the convertor is the problem.will cause decreased engine power, another sign is bucking and jerking upon accelerating. the car will lose power when going up a hill. if engine runs hotter then usual and coolant is up to par, may be a bad converter.

My 1997 Saturn SL1 exhaust smells like rotten eggs, even after being driven 20 miles. It had sat for a while before today, when I bought it. Oxygen sensorwas replaced yesterday, and otherwise, it runs...

replace your catalytic convertor. you can go to a smog shop and have them perform a "cat efficiency test" and see what they tell you or simply go to a muffler shop have them install one.

My 95 cavailer just starting having a problem. motor jolts, has loss of power climbling a hill misfires , engine doesnt die it will start right up but runs poorly also can smell a odor not sure if its gas...

I would check to make sure your spark plug wires are not coming loose from the coil packs on the back of the engine, i had the same problem with a '97 cavalier and then the check engine light started to flash meaning it had a catalyst threatening mis-fire.

also check to make sure you have the correct order, these things will run with the wires mixed up but they are gutless.

a new fuel filter might not hurt either, they are easy to change located near the back axle, one nut and a quick connect fitting.
