My crankshaft pulley came off almost off not completely,is there any damage i need to know about be fore i tighten it back ?

the red mark is where the timing is supposed to be after u have bypassed the electronic advance.the first white line on the left is tdc.

SOURCE: Removing Camshaft pulley on 2.5 Dohc forester motor

To replace the timing belt back guard you will have to remove both pulleys.There is a small bolt under each pulley holding the belt guard Use a large socket to hold the pulley while you break the bolt loose with a 17mm socket. I have just done this while replacing my head gaskets due to coolant boiling from the gasket leak.

For 1995 Buick Park AVE. 3800 "Harmonic Ballancer" Pulley = Crankshaft Pulley. Requires A Flywheel LOCK tool, And A Harmonic Ballancer Pulley >PULLER and is Fairly Simple to Replace.

CAUTION: The balancer is serviced as an assembly. DO NOT attempt to separate pulley from balancer hub.
INSTALL OR CONNECT

  1. Crankshaft balancer.
    • Lubricate seal surface with engine oil.
  1. Balancer bolt.
    • Hold flywheel with J 37096 or equivalent.
    • Tighten balancer bolt to 150 Nm (110 lbs. ft.) +76°
Basicly use Pulley Mount BOLT to PUSH New Pulley Onto Crankshaft.

I have a mitsibishi magna 2005 ES series iii. It has been making a lot of noise, I need to replace the pulley from the crankshaft (03047) and would like a diagram to assist me access this part easily


First YOU will need a pulley puller its a three prong device for pulling pulleys without damaging it. A long allen-head bolt should be inserted into the crankshaft so the jaws of the puller only contact the hub of the pulley- not the outer ring. The pullers tapered tip should push against bolt to prevent damage to the crankshaft threads. You may be able to get a press on sleeve to renew the sealing surface if its been grooved from long time contact with the seal. It is pressed on with hammer and block of wood. To replace the pulley you will need a vibration damper installation tool. Lubricate the pulley hub with clean engine oil. Align the slot on the pulley with the key on the crankshaft and push the pulley on crankshaft as far as it will go. BE careful not to bend the outer ring of the pulley. Now you will need the vibration tool to press the pulley the rest of the way onto the crankshaft. Install the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt and tighten to the torque listed in the owners manual or get a repair manual with the torque tightness listed. I'm good but not good enough to know all the torque specs on every vehicle. Hope that Helps! The crankshaft pulley is the bottom pulley NORMALLY.

Harmonic balancer bolt came off while driving


Not all of them have a woodruff key, but yours may still be on the crankshaft if you had one. At one time, someone had that pulley off and did not tighten the bolt tight enough-they need to be very tight according to specs, over 100 ft. lbs. of torque when tightening.
Check the balancer for damage and the crankshaft where it sits on. If no visible damage, I think you could use it. Did you go back and pick up the bolt and washer? You need them, or a duplicate from a salvage yard. Now fit the balancer pulley on the crankshaft (its the crankshaft, not the camshaft). It only goes one way. If yours slides on any which way, you have lost the woodruff key, and will have to get one-it would fit in a slot on the shaft, and the notch in the pulley rides over the woodruff. if yours is like that, fit the pulley on, tighten the bolt down solid. You may have to wedge something against the pulley while tightening the bolt to keep the crankshaft from turning. Once you get it on, then fit your belt back on, and you're good to go.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
5S-FE Engines
  1. Remove the timing belt covers as previously detailed.
  2. Raise the engine just enough to remove the weight from the engine mount on the right side.
  3. Remove the thru-bolt, two nuts, and right hand mounting insulator.
  4. Remove the retaining bolts and remove the right hand mounting bracket (from the side the alternator was removed from).
  5. Remove the timing belt and timing belt guide. If the timing belt is to be reused, draw a directional arrow on the timing belt in the direction of engine rotation (clockwise) and place matchmarks on the timing belt and crankshaft gear.
  6. Remove the bolt retaining the No. 1 idler pulley and tension spring.
  7. Remove the No. 2 idler pulley.
  8. Remove the crankshaft timing gear , if it can not be removed by hand, use two flat bladed tools to pry it off. Make sure to position shop rags to prevent damages to the components.
  9. Remove the nut retaining the oil pump pulley.

To install:
  1. Align the cutouts of the oil pump pulley and shaft, and slide the pulley on. Retain the pulley while tightening the nut to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  2. Align the crankshaft timing pulley set key with the key groove of the crankshaft pulley, then slide the pulley on.
  3. Install the No. 2 idler pulley with the bolt and tighten to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm). Be sure the pulley moves smoothly.


NOTE Remove any oil or water on the idler pulley and keep it clean.
  1. Temporarily install the No. 1 idler pulley with the retaining bolt. Hint: use a 1.65 inch (42mm) bolt in length. Do not tighten the bolt yet. Install the tension spring. Pry the pulley toward the left as far as it will go, then tighten the bolt.
  2. Turn the crankshaft until the key groove in the crankshaft timing pulley is facing upward. Install the timing belt on the crankshaft timing, oil pump, No. 2 idler and water pump pulleys.


NOTE If the old timing belt is being reinstalled, make sure the directional arrow is facing in the original direction and that the belt and crankshaft gear matchmarks are properly aligned.
  1. Install the lower (No. 1) timing belt cover and new gasket with the four bolts.
  2. Align the crankshaft pulley set key with the pulley key groove. Install the pulley. Tighten the pulley bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
  3. Align the camshaft knock pin with the matchmarks on the oil seal retainer.
  4. Align the knock pin with the groove of the pulley, and slide the pulley onto the camshaft with the plate washer and set bolt.
  5. Tighten the set bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  6. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align the 0 mark on the lower (No. 1) timing belt cover.
  7. Install the timing belt and check the valve timing as follows:
    1. Align the matchmarks that you made previously, and install the timing belt onto the camshaft pulley.
    2. Loosen the No. 1 idler pulley set bolt 1 / 2 turn.
    3. Turn the crankshaft pulley two complete revolutions TDC to TDC. ALWAYS turn the crankshaft CLOCKWISE. Check that the pulleys are still in alignment with the timing marks.
    4. Tighten the No. 1 idler pulley set bolt to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
    5. Make sure there is belt tension between the crankshaft and camshaft timing pulleys.

  8. Install the upper (No. 2) timing cover with a new gasket(s).
  9. Align the two clamps for the engine wiring harness with the cover mounting bolts.
  10. Install the spark plugs.
  11. Install the right mounting insulator with bracket. Tighten the bracket bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm), insulator nuts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm) and thru-bolt to 52 ft. lbs. (71 Nm).
  12. Install the No. 2 engine mount bracket and tighten to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm); install the control rod and tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  13. Lower the engine.
  14. Install the alternator and alternator bracket.
  15. Install the drive belt and adjust the tension.
  16. Install the cruise control actuator with bracket.
  17. Install the fender apron seal and right engine under cover.
  18. Install the right front wheel.

If it's the main pulley that connects to the crankshaft and drives the serpentine belt, it's called the dampener pulley.
If the dampener pulley has worked loose or separated, you'll need to replace any damaged components, possibly including the pulley, mounting bolt and even the crankshaft and front engine housing could have been damaged if the pulley continued to turn while it was loose.
It could be as simple as tightening the bolt or as severe as a major engine rebuild. A mechanic can't know until he takes a look at it.

Timing belt


TIMING BELT & SPROCKETS R & I
NOTE: Some procedures may differ slightly due to engine
construction.
Removal
1) Remove all necessary air ducts. Position No. 4 piston at
TDC of compression stroke. Align timing marks. See Fig. 2. Remove fan
and fan shroud. Remove belts. If necessary, remove radiator and
splashguard.
2) Prevent engine from rotating and remove crankshaft timing
pulley retaining bolt. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers.
Remove spring from tension pulley. Loosen adjusting bolt and move
pulley toward water pump. Remove timing belt.
CAUTION: Ensure pistons are at TDC when rotating camshaft or damage
may result.
Inspection
1) Handle timing belt carefully. Avoid twisting or kinking
belt. Do not allow belt to become contaminated by water, oil, dirt or
other contaminates. Inspect belt for cracks or damage. If necessary,
replace.
2) Measure tension pulley spring length and force. Spring
length should not exceed 2.76" (70.2 mm) and spring force should not
be less than 197-347 lbs. (27-48 kg).
3) Replace tension pulley spring if not within specification.
Installation
1) Pull tensioner fully toward water pump side and
temporarily tighten retaining bolt. Ensure No. 4 cylinder is at TDC on
compression stroke by rotating crankshaft until keyway aligns with
mark on front crankshaft seal housing (12 o'clock). Rotate camshaft
until timing mark on cam gear (arrow) aligns with mark on upper
camshaft cover (notch). See Fig. 2.
NOTE: When timing marks are aligned as stated above, No. 4 piston
is at TDC on compression stroke.
2) Position timing belt over crankshaft sprocket, oil pump
sprocket, camshaft sprocket and tensioner in that order. Ensure belt
is positioned in sequence given and without slack between sprockets.
Loosen tension sprocket adjusting bolt allowing spring tension to
tighten belt. Tighten adjusting bolt temporarily.
3) Temporarily install crankshaft pulley bolt and rotate
crankshaft 2 complete revolutions in opposite direction of engine
rotation, until marks on crankshaft and front oil seal retainer are
aligned again. See Fig. 2. Loosen tensioner lock bolt, allowing
tesioner spring to fully adjust tension. Tighten tensioner lock bolt.
4) Install timing belt covers. To complete installation,
reverse removal procedures. Tighten all bolts to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of this article.

I would like to know where the crankshaft gasket is? I have a 1994 dodge spirit, a 6 cyl. How hard is it for me to replace the gasket?


3.3L and 3.8L Engines
  1. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  2. Remove the right front wheel and inner splash shield.
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt from the engine.
  4. Remove the center bolt of the crankshaft pulley.
  5. Using a claw-type gear puller, remove the crankshaft pulley from the crankshaft. When using the puller, make certain that the claws are situated on the inner section of the pulley. If the claws are used on the outer section of the pulley, the pulley will be damaged.
  6. Use tool C-4991 or the equivalent to remove the oil seal from the timing chain cover. Make certain not to damage the crankshaft seal surface of the cover. Fig. 10: Use a claw-type gear puller to remove the crankshaft pulley/damper — 3.3L and 3.8L engines 86723231.gif

    To install:
  7. Install the new seal by using tool C-4992 or the equivalent. Place the seal into the opening with the seal spring towards the inside of the engine. Install the seal until flush with the cover.
  8. To install the crankshaft pulley to the crankshaft a 5.9 in. (150mm) long bolt, a thrust bearing and washer, and plate L-4524 or equivalent.
    1. Tap the crankshaft pulley onto the crankshaft with a rubber or plastic mallet making sure to hit the pulley on the center portion.
    2. Once the pulley is started onto the crankshaft, install a nut the thrust bearing and washer, and the plate L-4524 onto the bolt.
    3. Thread the bolt into the end of the crankshaft and screw it in at least 2 or 3 complete turns.
    4. Tighten down on the nut on the bolt to slowly press the pulley onto the crankshaft until completely seated.
    5. Remove the bolt, nut, washer and thrust bearing, and plate L-4524 from the crankshaft. Fig. 12: Installing the crankshaft pulley — 3.3L and 3.8L engines 86723229.gif

  9. Install the center crankshaft pulley bolt and tighten it to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  10. Install the accessory drive belt and tighten by following the instructions in Section 1.
  11. Install the splash shield and front wheel.
  12. Lower the vehicle to the ground.

Timing Belt - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Although timing belts may last for thousands of miles past the recommended replacement interval, they should be replaced every 60,000 miles to prevent trouble or damage should they snap. Timing belts do not usually give an indication that they are worn or aging without removing the cover(s) and inspecting the belt. A worn or damaged belt could give out at any time. In some cases, should a timing belt snap while the engine is running, damage could be done to the valve trains or pistons requiring a partial or full engine disassembly. Also, should the belt go when the vehicle is far from home, a costly tow or even more costly repair job and considerable inconvenience may be suffered.
Timing belts must always be handled carefully and kept completely free of dirt, grease, fluids and lubricants. This includes any accidental contact from spillage, fingerprints, rags, etc.. These same precautions apply to the pulleys and contact surfaces on which the belt rides.The belt must never be crimped, twisted or bent. Never use tools to pry or wedge the belt into place. Such actions will damage the structure of the belt and possibly cause breakage.


Spectrum
(see Figures 1, 2 and 3)
The engine must be removed from the vehicle for this procedure to be performed.
  1. Remove the engine and mount it to an engine stand.
  2. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  3. Remove the engine mounting bracket from the timing cover.
  4. Rotate the crankshaft until the notch on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the 0 degree mark on the timing cover and the No. 4 cylinder is on TDC of the compression stroke.
  5. Remove the starter and install the flywheel holding tool No. J-35271 or equivalent.
  6. Remove the crankshaft bolt, boss and pulley.
  7. Remove the timing cover bolts and the timing cover.
  8. Loosen the tension pulley bolt.
  9. Insert an Allen wrench into the tension pulley hexagonal hole and loosen the timing belt by turning the tension pulley clockwise.
  10. Remove the timing belt.
  11. Remove the head cover.
Inspect the timing belt for signs of cracking, abnormal wear and hardening. Never expose the belt to oil, sunlight or heat. Avoid excessive bending, twisting or stretching.
To install:
  1. Position the Woodruff key in the crankshaft followed by the crankshaft timing gear. Align the groove on the timing gear with the mark on the oil pump.
  2. Align the camshaft timing gear mark with the upper surface of the cylinder head and the dowel pin in its uppermost position.
  3. Place the timing belt arrow in the direction of the engine rotation and install the timing belt, first to the crankshaft pulley, next to the camshaft pulley, then to the water pump pulley and finally to the tension pulley. Tighten the tension pulley bolt.
Once installed, there must be not slack in the timing belt. The belt teeth must be in perfect alignment with the gears.
  1. Turn the crankshaft 2 complete revolutions and realign the crankshaft timing gear groove with the mark on the oil pump.
  2. Loosen the tension pulley bolt and apply tension to the belt using an Allen wrench in the hexagonal pulley hole. Torque the pulley bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) while holding the pulley stationary.
  3. Check the timing belt tension using a belt tension gauge, it should be 40-48 lbs. (18-22 Kg).
  4. Adjust the valve clearances.
  5. To complete the installation, reverse the removal procedures. Torque the crankshaft pulley-to-crankshaft bolt to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).

Storm - SOHC ENGINE
(see Figures 1, 2 and 3)
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Remove the timing belt cover. If necessary, raise and support the vehicle, then remove the right under cover to access the lower timing cover bolts.
  3. If not done already, rotate the crankshaft so that the No. 4 cylinder is at TDC on its compression stroke by aligning the camshaft pulley timing mark to the 9 o'clock position.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  5. Remove the crankshaft pulley center bolt, the 4 crankshaft pulley side bolts and the crankshaft pulley from the vehicle.
  6. Loosen the belt tension pulley bolt, then remove the timing belt from around the tensioner and other pulleys. Remove the timing belt from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Make sure the crankshaft pulley keyway and groove is aligned with the oil pump timing mark and the camshaft pulley timing mark is in the 9 o'clock position. Install the timing belt around the crankshaft timing pulley, followed by the tensioner pulley, water pump pulley and the camshaft timing pulley.
  2. Tighten the belt tensioner retaining bolt. Make sure that the belt is properly tightened and is aligned evenly around all the pulleys:
    1. Turn the crankshaft 2 complete revolutions and realign the crankshaft timing gear groove with the mark on the oil pump.
    2. Loosen the tension pulley bolt and apply tension to the belt using an Allen wrench in the hexagonal pulley hole. Torque the pulley bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) while holding the pulley stationary.
    3. Check the timing belt tension/deflection using a belt tension gauge. The belt should deflect 0.63-0.79 in. (16-20mm) when 22 lbs. (98 N) of pressure is applied to the center of the longest belt stretch.
  3. Check that the camshaft is still aligned to the 9 o'clock position.
  4. Install the timing belt cover, secure it with the 2 lower mounting bolts, then torque the bolts to 89 in. lbs. (10 Nm).
  5. Install the crankshaft pulley to the crankshaft dampener, secure the center bolt and the 4 side bolts. Torque the center bolt to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm) and the 4 side bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  6. If removed, install the right side under cover.
  7. Lower the vehicle. Install the 4 upper timing belt cover retaining bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8. Install the right engine mount.
  9. Install the power steering pump drive belt and alternator drive belt. Adjust them to the proper belt tension.
  10. Remove engine support fixture and reconnect the negative battery cable.

Camshaft pulley is completely off


The one item determining if this can be repaired is the condition of the keyway on the crankshaft and pulley. (the slot where the locating key goes) If the slot is severely damaged on either the crank or pulley, you will need to replace the damaged item. (if it's the crankshaft, its a really big job.) If it's not terrible, you can file it back to shape with a small flat file and get a new woodruff key. Chances are the majority of the damage is at the pulley. That should be changed. Otherwise, putting it back on is just a matter of sliding it on and tightening it up. (if you do this with hand tools, bring it to a shop afterwards and ask them to put an air gun on there to finish tightening.) You can usually get another pulley from any scrapyard far cheaper than a new one from dealer.
