SOURCE: ignition

Thanks to Steve (FORDSVTPARTS)...he helped me with this a few weeks ago...so I used most of his instructions, and added some stuff. Everybody's had problems with this...and everybody thinks that it is going to cost a ton of money, or you have to drill it out...well you dont...here it is:

1. To replace the cylinder you just remove the column shrouds to gain access to the cylinder, you will need to be able to turn the cylinder to remove it the easy way.

2. If you are having problems getting your key to turn then try the old "hit it with the palm of your hand method". This should be enough to get the key turned.

3. Turn the steering wheel 1/2 turn to the right so that you have easy access to the lock cylinder, and some working room. With the key turned to the "on" position, there is a small hole in the housing, that the cylinder goes into, that faces towards the driver, Use a small pick or philips screwdriver or whatever will go in the hole, push in the release pin inside the hole and the cylinder slides right out.

4. If you absolutely can't turn it you will have to drill it out or take it in somewhere and have the job done.

5. Once the old cylinder is out the new one slides in by aligning the "d" shape inside and it will now work, That's it.

Note: Most dealerships will build the cylinder to match your keys, some charge for this and others don't. Just call the parts department, give them your VIN...and they can look up your Key Code, cut you a Non-Programed PATS key, and build your new ignition cylinder off of that. Or you can take them your programed key (if you have a spare). If you are like most if us that leave your key in the ignition once you start having this problem...DON'T TAKE IT OUT. This will help you in the removal of the broken cylinder. Hope this clears up everyone's questions.

Good luck and if your not sure, call a lock smith. The cost is around $80.00 lock and installed.

There is at least 5 main wires on that car, I would recommend going to the junk yard and replacing it

05 ford focus, key won't turn in the ignition, tried both sets of keys.

Try wiggling the key and tapping near the ignition and see.If the Key starts turning in the ignition. Also spray wd-40 in the ignition switch hole and let the wd-40 spray liquid remain in there for 30 minutes then see if you can turn the key in ignition.Try this wd-40 spray couple of times,if still the same problem then, the ignition has to be replaced. Also the keys are to be reprogrammed by the dealer.Without getting your car key reprogrammed they will not work with new ignition lock cylinder. This problem is very common in ford focus, many other users too have noticed this and are very disappointed with the ford service due to this problem.Click this link directly to see the same problem with other ford focus users;--- http://www.carcomplaints.com/Ford/Focus/2003/accessories-interior/key_wont_turn_in_the_ignition.shtml ----------------- Thank you.

2000 FORD FOCUS IGNITION REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Your ignition is what supplys your spark pluggs with electricity in order to creat combustion in your engine. Most older cars have distributers, if you drive a focus with a zetec it will have a coil pack. I have a 2002 Focus SVT that I upgraded the ignition system to a full racing system for around $200. What you need to change is the coil pack, spark pluggs and spark plugg wires. You only have to remove about four bolts on the coil pack and it just pulls out.
