Question about 2002 Pontiac Grand Am
The Service Engine light sometimes come on at the start of the engine and it remains on, and at other times the Service Engine Soon light does not come on at the start of the engine. I took it to a mechanic who said it is reading trouble code P0449, but I do not remember all the possibilities he told me, so would someone please tell me if this is an expensive fix, and if so will GM pay for it since I do remember the mechanic saying this was a common problem with some GM vehicles?
Code 449 is for a problem with the vent valve solenoid for the EVAP system. The computer uses the EVAP system to vent the gas tank to the vapor canister when the engine is running.
The valve would need to be tested and may need to be replaced. As far as I know, GM will not pay once the car is past the 7 yr 70,000 mile warranty.

you can go to advance auto and use there scanner for free to clear the code its called an obd2 connection or when you disconnect your battery you can touch your black negative cable to your red positive cable that connects to the battery and it will completley drain everything and reset but warning you if your trying to get the car through emissions your gonna have to drive the car 50 or 100 miles after you disconnect the battery each time..

sounds like you have a vacuum leak, check all the vacuum hoses and replace any broken or kinked ones, also check around the intake manifold gasket for leaks. any air leaks after the air flow meter creates 'un-metered' air which inturn will make the car run rough and stall, hope this helps

I have the same car and if the gas cap is loos for any reason the service engine light will come on so check that. If it is it will turn off in a few days after you tighten it.

Sounds like you have a bad wheel speed sensor. You need to have it scanned. Since it's been sitting, it might just be a bad connection to one of the speed sensors.
