I have a 98 ford contour SE with the 2.4 L. I had the codes ran and all it had said was both O2 sensors going out. But I have had it start stalling on me while driving , and it will for some random reason start shuttering best term I could use or like kicking in and out of gear. Its an automatic trans. Just fluids they are good no smell of anything burnt. It does not leak had a guy from a shop drive it never did anything. I need help figuring it out. Thanks

If you haven't replaced the O2 sensors start there.

    Thanks for the reply. I am going to change o2 sensors and try the idle control sensor if that does not work, I am at a loss.

Change the fluid. Since you only get about half of the fluid to drain during a change (the rest is held in the torque converter with no way to drain it), you will have to change the fluid three times in order to dilute the "dirty" fluid with enough clean fluid to make the end product mostly clean. Change the fluid, then run the car for awhile. Repeat two more times. And only use Honda fluid.

THE GEAR LINKAGE WILL HAVE JUMPED OUT OF ALIGNMENT, ITS A 10mm af spanner to fix it you should see where it was originally placed by the marks on the selector rod needs two person job one under the car with the spanner and one positioning the gear lever.

I have a ford v6 3.0 dohc i changed plugs and wires fuel filter and fuel line pressure sensor had five codes come up the car starts properly took for a test drive and ran well but shut off when i stop

Code 191 is fuel pressure range-performance.
Code 172 and 175 are O2 sensors reading rich.
Codes 1132 and 1152 are O2 sensors not switching.
Under normal conditions, the fuel pressure should be around 40psi.
The pressure sensor is reading the pressure is too low or too high.
The O2 sensors should be switching back and forth between lean and rich. They are both staying rich.
Based on that info, I would reason the fuel pressure regulator has failed, or the return line to the tank is plugged.
The engine is getting too much fuel and the computer can't control it.

I have a 1997 ford contour and the diagnostic tool reads left bank lean i was told that could be the fuel filter also my check engine light is on is this normal when the fuel filter needs changing?

It is not a fuel filter. If the left bank was lean the right would be also since the complete engine is fed from a single line to the injectors. Your O2 sensor is probably throwing the code to set the check engine light. The O2 sensors control the amount of fuel fed to the engine. Most Fords use an upstream and a down stream O2 sensor. From what you are describing I am betting your vehicle has way over 100,000 miles on it. The O2 sensors start going out after this point. They are subject to heat extremes and contamination from burned oil deposits and carbon and or fuel additives that you place into your fuel tank. If the code is reading or giving you a "lean" condition more than likely your upstream O2 sensor has bit the bullet finally.

I have a 98 Ford Contour and these codes. - P0708, P0171, P0442

p0708 is transmission range sensor curcuit high output, p0171 is system to lean ( bank 1 ), p0442 is EVAP emission control leak ( small ).

Have 98 ford contour, 2.0 DOHC, 4 cylinder. Got a P0141 code. changed wires, plugs, cleaned MAF, replaced both o2 sensors. What's else can this be, engine light still on. I drove for awhile to see if light...

You have an oxygen sensor code. This code by the way is not for a signal problem rather it is the heater part of the O2 sensor. Check fuse #13 to see if it is blown. This is a 30 amp fuse. If fuse is ok then put a meter on the two white wires on O2 sensor and check for 12V when the ignition is on. Your code is being tripped due to a heater malfunction and unless you determine if power exists you cannot go any further. Hope this helps

The P0133 code will not keep the engine from starting. If this is the 2.0L engine, it is belt timed, you need to check the timing belt and ensure that it is not broken. If it is broken then the engine will not run at all, I see you replace the ignition components, with the exception of the crankshaft position sensor, check that as well. sounds like EGR valve and sensor this controls idle speed when at a stop. the po171 is a burn lean or rich code need to know what bank 1 or 2. also check for a vacuum leak from one of the hoses.

I would replace the maf sensor first.It is cheaper.It controls the air fuel mixture for your car and sends this signal to your pcm.It is probably not getting enough gas to idol your car.

I need the location of the o2 sensors on a 1997 ford contour gl 4-121 2.0 dohc

Ford contour has 4 O2 sensors, one under the coil pack between the engine and firewall (bank 1, sensor 1 and it's a pain to reach), one in front between the radiator and engine and two accessible from underneath.
